Individual research project

Aim: to get an experience of conducting and presenting your research in English.

Expected learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the project you will be able to:

- find research articles on any subject using jstor and other browsers;

- search for the relevant information in an academic article on the subject of your research;

- give a summary (oral and written) of the major findings and theories in the area of your research;

- give a list of references;

- use specific terms of your research area;

- have a broader view on your research topic.

Task:

1. Find and read at least 15 research articles on the area of your research.

2. Write out ideas and basic research findings.

3. Summarize the scope of your own research in English.

4. Prepare a 10-minute talk and a ppt.-presentation.

5. Prepare a 1-2-page summary sheet.

6. Make a list of references.

Questions to be addressed in your presentation and summary sheet:

  1. What is your research area?
  2. What is your hypothesis? What do you want to find out?
  3. How are you going to find it out? What research methods do you use?
  4. Who is your scientific advisor? Who conducted the most important research in your area? What did they find out?
  5. How is your research different from what has already been found out?
  6. Why is your research necessary and useful? Who should benefit from it?
  7. What did you find out? What are your conclusions?

Assessment criteria: Presentation

0 – no

1 - poor

2-some major errors/omissions

3- a few minor errors

4 – almost no mistakes
