The morpheme is the smallest unit of form.
The root-morpheme and affixal morphemes, free and bound morphemes
For example, (to) teach, teacher, teaching; (to/a) count, counter, countable
Free morphemes can be found only among roots, so the morpheme desire - in the word undesirable there is only one free morpheme, the word pen-holder has two free morphemes pen - and hold -.Bound morphemes are those that do not coincide with separate word- forms, so all derivational morphemes, such as –ness, -able, -er are bound.
From Greek “allos” means “other” and “morphs” - “form, shape”. (The definition: the allomorph is a different morpheme (unit of language) with the same meaning. An example of an allomorph for the prefix in- is il-.)
