Teenagers’ World

1. Read the text and define the main problems most of teenagers face nowadays. Think over the ways to solve these problems. What other things are urgent for the teenagers’ world from your point of view. Be sure you know the underlined words and word-combinations.

Growing up can cause problems. Many of them are common for all young people.

But the problem number one of most teenagers is the problem of fathers and sons. When you are 16 or 17, you want to be treated like an adult, to be more independent in your actions and your way of life. You want your parents to consider your opinion and not interfere in your private life. You want to develop interests and values different from those of your parents. That sets a conflict between the two generations, the generation gap. Some parents neglect their children; they can’t find a common language with each other. It happens sometimes that children run away from home. But it’s not the way out. Parents should help their children though it is difficult to be tolerant and to find the right approach to them. And teens must trust their parents and try to find in their parents more positive than negative traits. You need to talk your problems over in the family but not to quarrel every time you have some disagreement.

Another one of the real problems is having no close friend. A lot in our life depends upon the friends we have, their influence on us. We try to make friends with cheerful and true people. We want to have much in common with our friend, to socialize with a person who has the same point of view on significant items. We expect for our friend’s understanding and support if we are in trouble. The proverb says “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. But to be such a person and to have such a friend is a hard work

The other very important problem of teens is their study. Sometimes you feel bad because of teachers’ or groupmates’ attitude to you. You are tired of studying, that’s why you don’t have energy and time for doing other things. Another problem is marks. We try to do our best to have good marks, but our parents never like them.

There are other serious and worrisome problems of modern teenagers such as smoking, alcoholism, and drug-habit. People of almost every age are susceptible to pernicious habits but they hit the youth the hardest. Some young men use drugs because they think that they are cool guys. But in fact they don't realize how wrong and dangerous it is. They can't stop and become dependent on drugs - drug addicts. This involves the other serious problems: juvenile delinquency, AIDS.

Teenagers are greatly influenced by social problems such as unemployment, dysfunctional families and the stress of getting into a new school. They don't know how to cope with the problems which do not depend on them. They're badly prepared for their solution mentally, spiritually and even physically. If they fail, they can be driven to despair and won't find the way out if not helped by their families, school and some other representatives of society.

In fact, teenagers have got a lot of work. They're busy with their studies, household chores, and some of them have a paid job. But there's no time for fun and they want to be entertained at least sometimes. This excessive work leads to an inner conflict which is usually expressed in the form of an open, direct protest against the world of grown-ups. Most teens don't know how to organise their free time for raising their cultural level, enriching their knowledge and improving their physical forms.
