The Discourse

Why?

Notes (The place in the extract, the metaphorical usage of the words)

The political and totalitarian discourse

Bombing

protective

detected

to deter

bribery

violence

to purge

obligatory

assault

had decreed

policy

system

blindly obey

The words, which are related to the political and totalitarian discourses, are used in the paragraphs where either the order Noah established on the Ark is described or the animals, suffering because of them. The usage of these words emphasizes the idea, of Noah’s likeness with the totalitarian regime rulers.

The words from these discourses are not used for the description of the animals’ behavior- they don’t need in charging each other to do what they want- it always happens naturally without a policy of totalitarianism.

The medical and genetic

discourse

unhygienic prostate examinations

bilious

selected

species

We may suppose the author uses the words from the genetic discourse for conveying the idea how important was the voyage in relation to the evolution and the development of the animal world. The medical terms are used to describe the conditions on the ship.

The medical term bilious creates a personification- Water sluiced down from a bilious sky to purge the wicked world. Here the sky ispersonified- it is bilious- and it is the used metaphor, usually related to a man or woman.

Navigation, timbering

Gangway

Bunks

the ship’s carpenters

screwed

hatches

timbers

whittled

galley

The words from the navigation discourse seem to be very natural in the text about the voyage.

The words, which refer to the discourse of the timbering are of a great importance, they are used in all paragraphs, what can be explained by the broader context of the book.

Animal world

Pachyderms

Slaughter

Camel

Rabbit

Fish

Lizard

Mouse

Hoopoe

Swan

the pelican

the heron

stork

shellfish

lobster

The usage of the names of the animals also seems to be quite ok in the text devoted to the description of the Flood. Most of them appear in the last paragraph, where there is an enumeration of animals who were disappointed not to be eaten during the voyage. Before they are called with the common neutral word animals or with a term Pachyderms, referring to a number of them.

There are commonly used words like fish and swan, lizard etc, and Latin originated biological terms.

Biblical discourse

Lamentations

Divisiveness

Ritual

Noah

God

Blessing

God-fearing man

The words from the religion discourse appear in the strange combinations with the words from the political and animal discourse. This may be explained by the author’s intent to show how the religion is deeply connected with the other spheres of life. For instance the word from the religion discourse is used with the word both from totalitarian and animal discourse: ritual slaughter. The word divisiveness presents in the text surrounded by the words also from two discourses- political and animal ones: divisiveness of God’s animal policy.

The words from this discourse are used mainly in the last and last but one paragraphs- the presence of them there is the attempt to justify the awful order on the ship with the God’s will.
