Human overpopulation

Human overpopulation occurs if the number of people in a group exceeds (превышать) the carrying capacity (вместимость) of the region occupied by the group. The term often refers to (относится к) the relationship between the entire human population and its environment, the Earth, or to smaller geographical areas such as countries. Overpopulation can result from an increase (увеличение) in births, a decline (уменьшение) in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or depletion (истощение) of resources. *How can depletion of resources lead to overpopulation?

The human population has been growing continuously since the end of the Black Death (чума), around the year 1400, although the most significant increase has been in the last 50 years, mainly due to (благодаря) the development of medicine and increases in agricultural productivity (производительность). The United Nations has expressed concern (озабоченность) on continued excessive (чрезмерный) population growth in sub-Saharan Africa. As of December 1, 2013 the world's human population is estimated to be over 7 billion by the UN. Most recent estimates for the carrying capacity of the Earth under existing conditions are between 4 billion and 16 billion. *What other regions suffer from overpopulation? (suffer – страдать)

Nevertheless, the rapid recent increase in human population is causing some concern. Many environmental problems, such as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (углекислый газ), global warming, and pollution, are aggravated (усугубляется) by the population expansion. Other problems associated with overpopulation include the increased demand for resources such as fresh water and food, starvation and malnutrition, consumption of natural resources faster than the rate of regeneration. However, some believe that waste and over-consumption, especially by wealthy nations, is putting more strain (нагрузка) on the environment than overpopulation. * What are the effects of overpopulation?

Attempts (попытки) to mitigate (смягчить) the effects associated with overpopulation have historically included eugenic experiments i n the early 19th century. This focused on forcefully (насильственно) sterilizing people. Almost all developed countries developed laws and regulations around this theme of reducing the reproduction of undesirables. Besides sterilization, the methods included forced abortions, birth control, marriage restrictions (ограничение)) according to race, limited genetic testing, racial segregation and segregation of the mentally disabled (умственно отсталый). The eugenics concept was expanded in Nazi Germany during WWII. Genocide is the process of reducing (сокращать) the population of a race or ethnic group by murder (убийство). Most countries have no direct policy of limiting their birth rates, but the rates have still fallen due to educating people about family planning, increasing access to birth control and contraception. Only China has imposed legal restrictions on having more than one child .*What were and are the possible ways of controlling population growth?

Throughout history, populations have grown slowly despite (несмотря на) high birth rates, due to the population-reducing effects of war, plagues (чума) and high infant mortality. During the 750 years before the Industrial Revolution (конец 18-начало 19 века), the world's population increased very slowly (медленно), remaining under 250 million.

Dr Alex Berezow states (утверждает) that overpopulation is not a Western world problem and people often cite China and India as major population contributors; however he notes that with rising wealth in those countries, population growth will begin to slow, as population growth is strongly linked to the economic stability of a country. *Can you explain why economically developed countries have ageing population while poor countries greatly contribute to the world’s population?

FACTS:

-The world population is currently growing by approximately 74 million people per year. Current United Nations predictions (прогнозы) estimate that the world population will reach 9.0 billion around 2050.

-Almost all growth will take place in the less developed regions, where today's 5.3 billion population of underdeveloped countries live. By contrast, the population of the more developed regions will remain mostly unchanged, at 1.2 billion.
