A. Personal finance

Sometimes in a shop you can be asked: “How do you want to pay?” You can answer: Cash / By cheque / By credit card.”

Ina bank you usually have a current account, where you withdraw money to pay your everyday bills. You usually try to avoid spending more money than you have. Ifyou do, you can be said to be in the red.

Sometimes the bank may lendyou money - this is called a bank loan. Ifsome bank (or a building society)lends you money to buy a house, that money is called a mortgage. When you buy(or, more formally, purchase) something in a shop, sometimes you may be offered a discount on something you buy at a shop. Itis not usual to haggle about prices in a British shop, as it is in, say, a Turkish market.

The money that you pay for services, e.g. for your school or a lawyer, is usually called a fee; the money paid for a journey is a fare.

If you buy something that you feel was reasonably priced and high-quality, it's a bargain. If you feel that it is definitely not worth what you paid for it, then you can call it a rip-off.

B. Public finance

The government collects money from citizens through taxes. Income tax is the tax taken from wages and salaries. Inheritance tax is collected on what people inherit from others.

Customs have to be paid on goods imported from other countries.

The government also sometimes pays out money to people in need, e.g. unemployment benefit, a scholarship and grants (for example student grants to help to pay for studying).

Every country has its own special currency. Every day the rates of exchange are published.

Everything at Once

As sly as a fox, as strong as an ox
As fast as a hare, as brave as a bear
As free as a bird, as neat as a word
As quiet as a mouse, as big as a house

All I wanna be, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything

As mean as a wolf, as sharp as a tooth

As deep as a bite, as dark as the night
As sweet as a song, as right as a wrong
As long as a road, as ugly as a toad

As pretty as a picture hanging from a fixture
Strong like a family, strong as I wanna be
Bright as a day, as light as play
As hard as nails, as grand as a whale

All I wanna be, oh, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything, everything at once
Everything at once, oh, everything at once

As warm as the sun, as silly as fun
As cool as a tree, as scary as the sea
As hot as fire, cold as ice
Sweet as sugar and everything nice

As old as time, as straight as a line
As royal as a queen, as buzzed as a bee
As stealth as a tiger, smooth as a glider
Pure as a melody, pure as I wanna be

All I wanna be, oh, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything, everything at once
