Development of position control system for tuyere in the melting of steel in oxygen converters

As we know the most common and popular method of steel production in our days is steelmaking in the oxygen converters, which occupies 70% of the total volume of production in our country. Because of that fact we continue the research in oxygen converter steelmaking. Unfortunately, research on real object often cant be possible, because of many reasons like high temperatures and lack of visibility into object. Therefore, nowadays scientists use different methods of physical modeling on cold models.

In the beginning were identified the following goals:

- research of process of interaction of a gas jet with a liquid bath on the cold model using machine vision technology,

- chose by the results of research technically right position of the lance above the level of the quiet metal,

- creating of local systems for controlling the position of the tuyere and oxygen blowing in the converter based on the obtained experimental data.

Secondly, to reach aims on top we have desided to follow this points:

- сonducting series of experiments on installation «INFUS-Converter»,

- calculating of results of experiment and parameters of technological cards melting in the converter,

- creating of local systems for controlling the position of the tuyere and oxygen blowing.

On Pic. 1 pictured the installation which consists of base, model, video, compressor moduls and special software.

The model is made in scale 1:15 and represent a copy of the 350-ton real converter.

To evaluate processes on a cold model and transfer them to the real have selected criterion of Archimedes as a criterion of physical similarity which links and explain the influence of inertial forces of the gas jet and hydrostatic forces of the liquid. There is an important measure in assessing the interaction of a gas jet with a liquid bath is the momentum of the gas jet.

Graph on Pic. 2 depicts the dependence of the logarithm of the dimensionless dimple depth from the logarithm of the criterion of Archimedes.

Due to the obtained experimental data it is possible to calculate the technological map of the oxygen blowing through the tuyere.

Finally, data from technological map of the oxygen blowing through the tuyere used for writing the programm to the operator work station.

Develop of system for controlling the position of the lance in the melting steel have completed by selection of equipment and preparation of the layout of the user interface using the functional scheme reflected on Pic. 3.
