READING

2. Read and translate the text. Pay attention to the terms, meaning natural disasters. Fill in the blanks with the words from the list from the exercise 1.

Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are very dangerous, They lead to financial, environmental or human losses. Natural disasters often happen and it is, in fact, impossible to stop them. Many natural disasters are interrelated, e.g. earthquakes can cause tsunamis and drought can lead directly to famine.

There are different kinds of natural disasters.

1)_________ begins when the water of rivers or lakes escapes its usual boundaries and

temporary covers a land which is not normally covered by water.

2)_________ are severe winter storms characterized by low temperature, strong winds,

and heavy snow. Blizzards have a very negative impact on local economics.

3)_________. Cyclone, tropical cyclone, hurricane, and typhoon are different names for

the same phenomenon, which is a cyclonic storm system that forms over the oceans, it is characterized by a large low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain. The deadliest hurricane ever was the 1970 Bhola cyclone; the deadliest Atlantic hurricane was the Great Hurricane of 1780 which devastated Martinique, St. Eustatius and Barbados. Another notable hurricane is Hurricane Katrina which devastated the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005.

4)__________ is a long period of months or years when there is a deficiency of water

supply in a region. It may have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region.

5)__________ are rain drops that have formed together into ice. Hail consists of balls or

irregular lumps of ice, that are called hail stones. Hail stones on Earth consist mostly of water ice and measure between 5 millimetres (0.20 in) and 200 millimetres (7.9 in) in diameter.

6)__________ is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both

the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud. Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, but are typically in the form of a funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris and dust. Tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctic.

7)__________ is an icy small Solar System body that, when close enough to the Sun,

displays a tail. This happens because the solar radiation and the solar wind affect the nucleus of the comet. Comet nuclei range from a few hundred meters to tens of kilometers across and may consist of ice, dust, and small rocks. Comets have been observed since ancient times and have traditionally been considered bad omens.

DISCUSSION
