Investigative Report on Musical Monuments and Historical Sets.

Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich.

Founded in 1893, Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich isthe oldest existing edition, that contributed into preservation of vast volume of lesser known music. The aim of these series is to publish works that are representative of the historic periods and specific European composers, in particular Austrian, in it’s original historic editions and academically flawless issues.

The general editor of the series was Guido Adler. From 1894 to 1904, the distributor of the series was “Artaria”, the old firm in Vienna, followed with distribution by “Breitkopf and Hartel” (1905-1913; 1919-1923), “Universal Edition” (1919-1938). After the Second World War, the series' distribution was taken over by “Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt” (1966 to present).

As for today, the total number of volumes is over 150. These volumes are not sorted according to the time lines, although they include early European music, starting from the works of 16th century. A good example of it could be Vol.90 – Niederländische und italienische Musiker der Grazer Hofkapelle Karls II (1564-1590).

What is interesting and unique about these series is that the edition published a lot of works of lesser performed composers. It is useful for someone who is looking for the original music scores of Michael Haydn, Gottlieb Muffat, Johann Pachelbel, Johann Fux, Christoff Gluck, Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Strauss Sr. in its original print. It also includes music of composers, whose works are hard to find anywhere else, for example scores of Nicolaus Zangius, Nonnosus Madlseder etc.

This monument could be extremely helpful for research and performance of works of the pre-classical period. It is especially valuable for organists and early keyboard and string instruments performers, and also for those, who are interested in reproducing the early opera, masses and solo vocal compositions.
