Models for Syntactic Analysis

Sample of the Syntactic Analysis of the Simple Sentence

(1) Having spent a sleepless night, he was unable to concentrate.

It’s a simple two-member complete sentence.

He – subject

was unable to concentrate – compound modal predicate

Having spent a sleepless night – adverbial of reason expressed by an subordinate objective phrase

When I got home | it was too late |and I did not see Miss Barkley until the next morning.

This is a composite sentence because it contains more than one unit of finite predication. The sentence consists of three clauses. It is a compound-complex sentence because the clauses stand in relations of idependence and those of dependence.

(1) When I got home is a subordinate time clause

(2 ) it was too late is the first principal (co-ordinate) clause

(3) I did not see Miss Barkley until the next morning is the second principal clause

Practical tasks

  4. Suddenly, all the differences between life and death became apparent

  6. As a nation we are still excessively burning fossil fuels, doing damage to our planet that will hurt our children's lives and future generations as well.
  7. As I have already told you, they are just friends.
  8. To draw one does not need big muscles.
  9. Ambridge is the only place you can return to after six months and find that nothing whatsoever has happened.
  10. Suddenly, all the differences between life and death became apparent.
