South Bank

The South Bank is an area of Central London located on to the south bank of the River Thames. It forms a long and narrow section of riverside development. It now forms a significant tourist district in central London, stretching from the Design Museum in the east to the London Eye in the west. A series of central London bridges connect the area to the northern bank of the Thames. It is popular with both tourists and locals due to the amazing amount of famous venues, things to do, general entertainment available along this incredibly scenic walk along the Thames.

A recent but already very popular tourist attraction is the London Eye, a giant observation wheel located in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank. The 135 meter (443ft) tall structure was built as part of London's millennium celebrations. The structure was designed by the architectural team of David Marks and Julia Barfield, husband and wife. The London Eye, or Millennium Wheel, was officially called the British Airways London Eye and then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe.

The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named "Shakespeare's Globe", opened in 1997 approximately 750 feet (230 m) from the site of the original theatre. And it was the New Globe Theatre in London. The Globe had a Latin motto: Totus mundus agit histrionem. It was a translation of one of Shakespeare's most famous lines: All the World's a Stage.

The Royal National Theatre (generally known as the National Theatre) is the theatre in South Bank, too. The Royal National Theatre was opened in 1963 under the directorship of Laurence Olivier, and its first performance was Peter O'Toole's Hamlet. In the years since, the National has put on about 500 more plays. Now the National offers workshops, performances and education for children, and live music performances

Tate Gallery is originally the National Gallery of British Art. The original building with a collection of 65 modern British paintings, was given by Sir Henry Tate and was opened in 1897. A gallery of modern foreign art was added in 1916, and three new galleries for foreign art and one for the works of John Singer Sargent were opened in 1926. The museum was damaged in World War II but reopened in 1949. Now renamed the Tate Britain, the complex is devoted to British art. The Tate Modern, Britain's first national modern-art museum in 100 years, opened in a large, refurbished power station on the south bank of the Thames in 2000.

In conclusion, South Bank is the cultural heart of the city and home to London's most iconic attractions, theatres, arts. The area is buzzing with things to see and do all year round; free events, music, film, exhibitions, dance, theatres, festivals and all sorts of family fun. I’m sure, it will be very interesting to see London on a Duck Tour or visit Queen Elizabeth Hall which is the second largest concert hall. Moreover, London Aquarium and Bernie Spain Gardens will be fantastic places to relax for every family. Imperial War Museum and The Old Vic are wonderful sights for tourists and inhabitants.
