That woman which has no true love in her daily life, slowly becoming dangerous for all the world. Because no woman can not bear to feel useless. Like every woman, Lady Brett Ashley loves and likes to feel it. But her life is not simple, she is not as young, she has got life experience and result of it is shown in Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises. Brett does not believe in men, she has lost her ability to love, so no one understands her, so she has to rely on her soulmate-

Jake.

Everybody have past. It is not always giving us power to keep living full live, our past can give us future as easily as stop us. This is the way, how Brett’s past destroyed her future. “ I have had such a hell of a happy life with British aristocracy!”(207)- Brett says in conversation with Mike. Her first marriage badly affected to her. ”Ashley, chap she got the title from, was a sailor, you know. Ninth baronet. When he came home he would not sleep in a bed. Always made Brett sleep on the floor. Finally, when he got really bad. He used to tell her he would kill her. Always slept with a loaded service revolver. Brett used to take the shells out when he would be gone to sleep. She has not had an absolutely happy life, Brett. Damned shame, too. She enjoys things so.”(207)-Mike says in conversation with Jake. And this is all what we know about her first marriage, but is not this enough? She went through the hell with the her first husband, can someone after such things still believe in good end of serious relationships? I think –no! But anyway, after bad experience, she feels good moments much brighter. She enjoys life much more then she could before. And I think she understands this as well as reader does.

Probably, Brett’s faith in men made her unable to love. She had a lot of men, she changed them like gloves, but no one of them had her. The problem is that they did not understand her, did not understand what she needs. And she needs to be free, to feel life open for her. And there is nothing wrong with her, just her values had changed of some of them just disappeared. The words “I love you!” do not mean much for, she is saying them just to everyone. She sad that did not want to spoil young Romero, but she already did it. She is using men as things, playing and manipulating them, still saying that she is doing them a favor. “You know it makes one feel rather good deciding not to be a bitch. It’s sort of what we have instead of God.”(249)- Brett says this to Jake. She does not believe in God, and no one must. But why she is using Jake to be confident in the correctness of her decision. It seems like everything what is she doing is turning to Jake.

It is obvious that Jake is very important person in Brett’s life. But who is he for her? And who is she for him? Sex problem is messing up all their relationship. Jake’s injury is more important for her, then for him as we can see it from their dialog:

“-Couldn’t we live together, Brett? Couldn’t we just live together?

-I don’t think so. I’d just tromper you with everybody. You couldn’t stand it.

-I stand it now.

-That would be different. It’s my fault, Jake. It’s the way I made.

-Couldn’t we go off in the country for a while?

-It wouldn’t be any good. I’ll go if you like. But I couldn’t live quietly in the country, not with my own true love.

-I know.

-Isn’t it rotten? There isn’t any use my telling you I love you.

-You know I love you.”(62)

Also this dialog shows how they both love each other. I think there is no way to tell how she feels knowing that she is that kind of person, for who ideal platonic love is not enough. This love is just showing her new type of hell of relationship. But, anyway, she is still coming back to Jake after every other man, knowing that there is no way for them to be together. I think, they are like family for each other, familiar from childhood, helping each other like best friends, there is still something more feels in air, when they are together.

Brett’s life is a game, where no one can become a winner. Even she can’t, because there is no way to win the game without rules. Her life represents parts of lives of everyone. When I was reading the novel I recognized similar actions to mine. Recognized my self, my mam, the women characters from other novels. There is nothing bad or critic I can say about Brett, she is just a woman. Woman, which want to be happy and free in the same time. Maybe, it is impossible to be that way, but isn’t it pretty to think so?
