Apartheid in South Africa

Apartheid was racial segregation politics accepted by the National Party governments in South Africa. It was the main party from 1948 to 1994 in the Union of South Africa and t?he Republic of South Africa (RSA). The policy of apartheid had serious social and economic consequences, experienced by native citizens of South Africa.

RSA Apartheid leaders made Bantu people to live in a special reservation, which was called the Bantustans. Leaving the territory by the natives and their following visiting large cities could be possible only on the basis of a special permission. The local people mostly worked at non-prestigious and underpaid jobs. Bantustan people became migrant workers, which had temporary work permissions. Also the taxes were not equally distributed between the citizens. Native Africans paid the income tax with a minimum amount of 360 rand?s per year, while European citizens paid from 750 rand?s per year. Native people of South Africa were deprived of almost all civil and political rights during the apartheid system implementation. Later there were introduced new discrimination laws governing the race relations.

The resistance against apartheid was one of the priorities of the United Nations and many other international human rights organizations in the 1970s and 1980s. Also, there was an internal dissident movement in South Africa. The collapse of apartheid regime was associated with active work of Nelson Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC) supporters. The main reasons of apartheid fall were the armed struggle of the ANC, international isolation of the racist regime, decrease of European population, as well as measures to dismantle the apartheid system, which were introduced during the reign of Frederik de Klerk. Election of Nelson Mandela as a South African President significantly contributed to apartheid regime fall. However, the consequences of the forty-five year policy are experienced till these days (Mawenda Kithinji, 2011).
