Part 3

(Oxymoron) 1

Daystar

(Assonance) 2

She wanted a little room for thinking:
(Alliteration) 3

but she saw diapers steaming on the line,

(Symbol) (Metaphor) 4
a doll slumped behind the door.

So she lugged a chair behind the garage

(Assonance)
to sit out the children’s naps.

(Alliteration)

Sometimes there were things to watch –

(Assonance)
the pinched armor of a vanished cricket, (Metaphor) 5
a floating maple leaf. Other days

(Alliteration) (Consonance)
she stared until she was assured
when she closed her eyes

(Symbol) 6
she’d see only her own vivid blood.

She had an hour, at best, before Liza appeared
pouting from the top of the stairs.
And just what was mother doing
out back with the field mice? Why,

building a palace. Later
that night, when Thomas rolled over and
lurched into her, she would open her eyes
and think of the place that was hers
for an hour — where
she was nothing,

(Repetition) 7
pure nothing, in the middle of the day.

Part 4

1) The title is an oxymoron. Instead of wishing at night the character, wishes during the day, due to being a slave towards her husband at nights. This contributes to the theme as wishes and desires she has.

2) This contributes to the theme as, the desires she has. As she wants a time for herself.

3) This contributes to theme as, responsibilities that she has towards her family. This explains why she wants a time to her self.

4) *A doll is a symbol of her self, and the word “slumped” is a metaphor of her exhaustion.

5) It’s a metaphor for her desires and wishes, as knights wear armor. As she want’s a knight to protect and free her. But the only thing that’s left is the armor, so she has no choice but to cope with her tasks.

6) It’s a symbol for awareness of life floating in her body.

7) It contributes to the theme, as she wishes to return to the hour she had to her self. Where she was nothing, to anybody for an hour.
