Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), the Poet and Novelist. Scott's Creative works are the transition from Romanticism to Realism

Sir Walter Scott was the 1^st great writer of historical novels.

Scott's first published work was a translation of Goethe's historical play " Gotz von Berlichingen".This work taught Scott that history is made by the people.

His first romantic poems:" The Lay of the Last Minstrel ", " Marmion"," The Lady of the Lake " attracted the attention of the reading public. They reproduced old legends and combined them with historical material.

Then he took to writing novels. It was not only a new beginning; it marked a new period in Scott's creative work. He declined the honour of poet-laureate in 1813 because he understood that writing official verses and odes on the birthday of members of the royal family would interfere with his creative work.

He published his 1^st novel " Waverley " anonymously. The book was a great success, and everybody wanted to know who the author was. Scott published many of his novels under the name of "The Author of Waverley", but finally the secret looked out.

Scott's works are divided into three groups.

I	are devoted to Scottish history	"Waverley", "Guy Mannering, or the Astrologer"," The Antiquary", "Black Dwarf", "Old Mortality", "Rob Roy", The Heart of Midlothian", "The Bride of Lammermoor", "A Legend of Montrose", "Redgauntlet", "The Fair Maid of Perth"
II	are devoted to English history	"Ivanhoe", "The Monastery", "The Abbot", "Kenilworth", "The Pirate", "The Fortunes of Nigel","Peveril of the Peak", "Woodstock"
III	are devoted to European History	"Quentin Durward", "The Talisman"," Count Robert of Paris", "Anne of Geierstein", "Castle Dangerous".
