Electrical equipment stands out among other equipment of a modern aircraft. The electrical energy the modern aircraft use can be easily transformed into other kinds of energy (mechanical, thermal, light and chemical).

It can be distributed by simple reduction or increase of voltage among individual consumers (electric motors, lamps, heaters, radio sets, etc). The units the on-board electrical system consists of are simple in service, small in size, light in weight and reliable in operation.

The on-board electrical energy sources include d.c. generators, special construction a.c. generators with drive, and chemical sources (storage batteries). Generators used for aircraft have a much higher power-to-weight ratio than the other types of generators.

With generators standing by the d.c. voltage is supplied from storage batteries to engine electrical starters, and, in case of emergency, to the most vital consumers.

Automatic regulators all the aircraft generators are provided with check the generators operation and ensure normal operation of consumers. It is done by preventing voltage and frequency fluctuation outside permissible limits. Automatic regulators also accommodate overload protective devices.

Rotary converters and rectifiers are intended for obtaining a high voltage direct current and for converting a.c. into d.c. respectively. Electric motors stand out among all electrical power consumers. They change electrical power to mechanical energy and their function in an aircraft is opposite to the function of the generator.
