The following is a dialogue between John and Sydney. While listening, think of the following questions. Play the dialogue as many times as you want.

· What happened when John called Ben last night?

· What was Ben probably doing when John called him?

· Was John frustrated?

· What did the speakers in the dialogue think Ben should do?

(to frustrate 1.

Dialogue № 1

You're so difficult to get through to!

-Did you call Ben last night?

-Yes, I tried to get a hold of him last night but it was difficult to get through.

-That’s strange. May be he was on the Net.

-That’s probably it. No wonder the line is busy all the time. May be he ought to get another line.

-Or he should get call-waiting.

To get through = get connected (to)

I tried to get through to you, but your phone was busy. —

I got through to him on the telephone at last.

to get a hold of smb.

No wonder

the line is busy линия занята

-I tried calling you a million times last night. But I couldn’t get through. What happened?

-Oh, I’m sorry I was on the phone all night last night.

-Cathie is very mad at you. She was trying to reach you by phone last night but she couldn’t get through.

-I know I’ve just talked with her. The problem was that I forgot to get off the net after I checked

my e-mail. I left it on until this morning.

-Did you call John yet? Kitty hasn’t been able to get a hold of him.

-I couldn’t get through either. I kept getting a busy signal. May be he was surfing the Internet.

(To surf - информ.

to surf the Net / Internet / Web — бродить по сети)

-Is Jeff on the phone again? He’s been talking for more than an hour.

- I know. I think we should get call-waiting so that people wouldn’t get mad when they couldn’t get through.
