E-learning in language classroom (masters)

The course explores modern information-communication technologies and their application in language teaching/learning and in philological research. After the course students will be able to:

- understand modern trends in the use of ICT for language learning/teaching and philology;

- use several Web 2.0 tools for personal and professional needs;

- apply several modern ICT tools in the language classroom.

Course requirements

To pass the course you have to actively participate in the class discussions and complete all course activities done in class, computer lab and at home. This is a graded course and you have to gain at least 55 points out of 100 to get the lowest passing grade. Those who don’t come to class and don’t do some of the given assignments might be required to read, annotate and discuss additional readings related to the topic and take an oral exam at the end of the class.

 

Activities:

Encyclopedia of Web 2.0 Tools – 15 points

Midterm Test – 25 points

Report on MOOCs – 20 points

Online Module in Moodle with 4 Online Activities – 40 points

 

Class Participation

To get full credit, you must come to class and actively participate in class discussions and computer lab activities. If you have any readings, you have to read them BEFORE coming to class and be able to answer questions and discuss the class topic. If for any reason you are unable to come to class, talk to the instructor and present plausible reasons for your absence. If you miss more than 3 classes, you will need to do a make-up work – annotate an article related to computer-assisted language learning/teaching (one article per every 3 missed classes).

Encyclopedia of Web 2.0 Tools

For this project locate, learn and use one Web 2.0 tool. You can find a list of cool web tools here:

You should try to use as many features of the tool as possible. For example, you can select www.blogger.com and create a short blog with this tool including a text, video, photo and an external link. Present your tool in class and post a link to it with a description of its features and educational usage in Encyclopedia of Web 2.0 Tools in our Moodle course.

 

Midterm Test

The test will be based on Sadykova (2003) and Sadykova (2009).

 

Report on MOOCs – 20 points



Select one MOOC that opens in September-October of 2013 (see http://www.mooc-list.com/ or other Internet sites to locate a course). This could be a course related to language and teaching/learning languages or any other course where you feel you can function well. Register to the course and study for at least two weeks. Then make a presentation of your course describing the course and reporting on your learning experiences. You should be able to demonstrate your course and assignments you've done.

 

Online Module in Moodle

Throughout the course you will be using Moodle platform and learning how to create language activities in this platform. For this project you need to create 3 fully developed language activities using Moodle tools. Your target audience are 4-5 year students who are advance level English language learners. You will be creating activities to supplement the following textbook: Proficiency Masterclass by Kathy Gude and Michael Duckworth (2002).

 

You will learn about a variety of language activities in Stanford (2009) Moodle 1.9 for Second Language and use some of the suggestions for creating your own Moodle activities.

The final version of the module must include:

  1. Introduction to the module where you describe the module topic, objectives, and activities.
  2. One group activity (discussion forum, chat, class blogging, wiki project)
  3. One individual activity (reading and/or writing activity, possibly with a glossary).
  4. Two tests that focus on vocabulary and grammar of the module.

Each activity has to include a clear step-by-step instructions and detailed evaluation criteria, when necessary.

 

Additional activity to make up for missed classes: Annotated article on technology-assisted language teaching/learning

This is an independent individual activity for which you need to select and annotate one of the articles published in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal such as Language Learning & Technology http://llt.msu.edu/ or Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks http://sloanconsortium.org/publications/jaln_main. The article should be related to computer-assisted language learning, computer-mediated communication, online education and the like. The annotation should include:

- Author, title of the article, where and when published

- Article main topic (research question)

- Major points/findings.

- Your ideas of how the information in this article may help you better teach or learn the language.

Write a 2-page annotation of the article and submit it to the instructor to compensate for missed classes.
