A. Vocabulary work:

I. Transcribe and practice reading the following words:

II. Prepare model reading of the passage beginning with “I wish I could make you understand…” up to “…and I’ve refused to marry him” (letter of October 3d, p.198-199).

III. Give the English for:

I. Translate into Russian:

1. The board is cheap, the surroundings quiet and conductive to literary life.

2. You see that Lock Willow isn’t entirely lacking in society.

3. I’ve been writing as fast as my pen would go every day this summer, and my only quarrel with life is that the days aren’t long enough to write all the beautiful and valuable and entertaining thoughts I’m thinking.

4. I know ahead of time that you won’t like my studio idea.

5. I owe you a great deal more than mere money.

6. Perhaps when two people are exactly in accord, and always happy when together and lonely when apart, they ought not to let anything in the world stand between them.

II. Explain what these words/ phrases mean:

III. Explain what is meant by the following:

1. I have quite a feeling of tenderness for it as I look back through a mist of four years.

2. They are so accustomed to the feeling that their senses are deadened to it…

3. I’ve abandoned romanticism; I shall go back to it later though, when my own adventurous future begins.

4. …only just now I’m in the enthusiastic stage.

5. I don’t think I can stand much more of Lock Willow.

6. I suspect that my letters have been very full of Master Jervie for a very long time.

7. The whole world seems empty and aching…

8. But Master Jervie and I got into a dreadful state of misunderstanding…

9. The two professions are not necessarily exclusive.

10. Of course he is a Socialist, and he has unconventional ideas.

11. In an instant it flashed over me.

 

IV. Answer the questions:

1. What brought into Jerusha’s mind the memories of the asylum? Were her memories as vivid and painful as they used to be? Do you think she was finally getting asylumsick? What proves it?

2. What was Judy’s new activity? What kind of book was it going to be?

3. Why did she come to Lock Willow after graduating from college? How did she work at her book?

4. Why did Jerusha send her Trustee a check for one thousand dollars? How did she feel about the appearance of her book?

5. How is the letter of August 27th different from Jerusha’s previous letters? Do you think it was a temporary feeling of loneliness or was it something serious?



6. Why was the girl feeling so unhappy? Why did she need to see her Trustee?

7. How did Jerusha describe her feelings for Master Jervie? How different were they from her feelings for Daddy?

8. What caused misunderstanding between Judy and Mr.Pendleton when he proposed to her? Why did Judy refuse?

9. Why was Judy afraid to tell Mr.Pendleton about the John Grier Home? Do you think her fear was grounded?

10. Why did Jerusha need Daddy’s advice? Wasn’t she grown-up enough to decide herself?

11. How was the Trustee going to settle Judy’s problem?

12. What is Judy’s last letter about? Why did she call it her “first love letter”?

13. Why did she recall the day in every detail? What was the most surprising thing about the meeting with Daddy?

14. What little details might have told Jerusha that Mr.Pendleton and her Trustee were the same person?

 

C.

I. Say whether the following statements are true or false and give the phrases or sentences which indicate this:

1. After four years at college Jerusha came to appreciate the home of her youth.

2. Judy was a talented writer.

3. Judy sold her story to earn money and repay her debts to her Trustee.

4. Judy and Mr.Pendleton were in love with each other.

5. Judy refused to marry Mr.Pendleton because she felt she should use the education and try to become a writer first.

6. Judy hoped her Trustee would be able to settle things for her when they met.

7. Judy was happy because at last she had a chance to see her Trustee.

 

II. Build up a situation around each of the pairs of sentences below so as to use the sentences in logical sequence:

1. I am perfectly sure every moment of my life that I am happy.

… this is a long letter from a person with writer’s cramp.

2. I was quite lonely without him – for two minutes.

I am quite lonely and want to be thought about.

3. I’ve caught a secret.

I’ve been writing as fast as my pen would go this summer.

4. Her I am at Lock Willow for the summer – forever maybe.

I can’t stand much more of Lock Willow.

5. He is just himself, and I miss him, and miss him, and miss him.

I’m missing you dreadfully, Jervie dear, but it’s a happy kind of missing.

6. I have a very much more special feeling for another man.

… and I’ve refused to marry him.

7. And his family are proud – and I’m proud, too!

… maybe he wouldn’t mind marrying into the proletariat so much as some men might.

 

III. Dwell on the following topics:

· Could you guess that Jerusha was in love with Master Jervie? That he was in love with Jerusha? When did it become obvious to you?

· Do you agree that Jerusha refused to marry Mr.Pendleton because in the heart of hearts she still felt inferior to others because of her asylum childhood?

· Do you agree that when two people are exactly in accord and happy when together and lonely when apart they ought not to let anything in the world stand between them? What can stand between them?

· What could you advise Jerusha if she asked you for advice – whether or not she should tell Mr.Pendleton about the asylum?

· Could you explain why the rich trustee who sent Jerusha to college wanted to remain unknown from the very beginning and until she graduated?

 

IV. Write a two-page long summary of the chapter making use of the vocabulary units from the list.
