The air we breathe

1. Read the text and find the sources of the air pollution.

Very often we understand air pollution as the outside pollution. "In 1985 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that toxic chemicals found in the air of almost every American home are three times more likely to cause some type of cancer than outdoor air pollutants". (Miller, G. Tyler, Living in the Environment: an introduction to environmental science. Belmont: Wadsworth, 1990, p.488) The EPA has found that the air in some office buildings is 100 times more polluted than the air outside. Poor ventilation causes about half of the indoor air pollution problems. Other problems come from specific sources such as copying machines, electrical and telephone cables, microbe-harboring air conditioning systems, cleaning fluids, cigarette smoke, carpet, linoleum tile, and building materials and furniture that emit air pollutants such as formaldehyde.

The most dangerous pollutants in cities are cars and industrial plants. Motor vehicles produce high levels of carbon monoxides (CO) and a major source of hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Fuel combustion in stationary sources is the dominant source of sulfur dioxide (SO2).

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the major pollutants in the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide is produced by combustion of sulfur-containing fuels, such as coal and fuel oils. Sulfur oxides can injure man, plants and materials.

Another type of air pollution is smog which consists mostly of a mixture of sulfur dioxide and fog. This smog is common during the winter in many cities all over the world.

Earth is everybody's home and nobody likes living in a dirty home. Together, we can make the earth a cleaner, healthier and more pleasant place to live.

Introduction

Air pollution is a problem that is often discussed in the news, and is a very important topic for many people. You may have noticed smog across this city on certain hot, summer days. It is another term for urban air pollution. Many people have health problems that are either caused or made worse by air pollution. This project is to provide you with useful information and links that will reveal to you the danger of air pollution to our health and how we can reduce it.

Task

You are required to do a project on The Air we Breath, air pollution causes, effects and how to reduce it. Try to find information about your city or town to compare it with other cities or countries.

Form groups of 2-4 persons.

Your project should have a title page, contents and a bibliography as well as video and pictures

Group members’ names should be included on the final project.

The project will be due in two weeks time.
