Travelling

Nowadays, we are facing globalization that is developing a single world economy and culture as a result of improved technology and communication. Close links are being developed between nations, and an increasing number of people are travelling to different countries to work, entertain or be educated.

To work in a foreign country or to make staying there more pleasant, one must master foreign languages, at least one. English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. English might be of great help in most European countries or elsewhere in the world. French and German are also helpful.

New principles of education formulated at the Bologna conference give young people opportunities to study not only at universities of their own countries but in any other European university as well. Both teachers and students are able to freely go to the university they have chosen to educate or be educated. Knowing foreign languages would be a must for them.

The thing is that different people are travelling all over the world for one reason or another.

A lot of people prefer flying by plane when going abroad. Hundreds of planes land and take off and thousands of passengers get on and off planes all over the world every day.

People usually make reservations for flights in advance, especially in summer time- when you arrive at the airport, you go to the check-in-desk where a clerk checks your ticket and luggage. Your suitcase goes to the plane, but you take your hand luggage with you. Very after they check your passport and X-ray your bags by cameras.

Then you wait in the departure lounge till they call your flight and tell which gate number to go to. After that you get on the plane and a flight attendant shows you your seat.

Passenger: Can I check in for the flight to London here?

Clerk: Yes, sir. May I have your ticket and passport, please?

Passenger: Certainly, here you are.

Clerk: Will you put your luggage on the scales? Oh, it's too heavy. You must pay an extra charge, I'm afraid.

Passenger: I'll take out a couple of things then.

Clerk: Can you put the luggage on the scales again, sir?

It's all right now. you may take your ticket and passport and here is your boarding-pass.

Passenger: Thank you.

Another popular way of travelling is by train, especially if you want to reach your destitution without getting into traffic jams.

In Britain there are no parts of the country that you can't reach by train. A fast Inter-City network connects London with all main cities. Trains leave the capital every hour during the main part of the day.

As most of the distances are quite short you can get anywhere you like in a single day or night.

On most trains you have the choice between the first or second (economy) class. First class seats are more comfortable and cost 50% more than second class fare. Inter-City trains have a full meal service; snacks and drinks are also available on other trains.

Booking a ticket

Passenger: I'd like a second-class ticket for an overnight train to Liverpool for next Monday, please.
Clerk: Yes, there is a slow train at 9.25 p.m. It arrives in Liverpool at 7.50 a.m. There is another

one which leaves here at 11 p.m. and arrives in Liverpool early in the morning. There is

nothing after11.

Passenger: I can't take the 9.25. It's too early for me, I'd like to go by the fast train. Could you give me

a lower berth?

Clerk: Let me see. Yes, I have one for you. Single or return?

Passenger: Return, please.

Clerk: Here is your ticket. Carriage 5, compartment 7.

Passenger: Thank you.

Public Transport

The easiest way of getting about a large city is by bus or underground. Public transport may be very expensive. In London, for example, the longer distance you travel, the higher the fare is. You usually buy tickets from a conductor or on some buses you pay the driver.

In most cities in Russia the fare doesn't depend on the distance and is the same for all public transport (buses, trams and underground).

The underground is a system of public transport consisting of trains that travel in tunnels below a city.

London underground is also called the Tube. In some countries the underground is called the Metro; in the USA it is called the Subway.

The underground is very popular in large cities because it is very fast.

London underground or "Tube" has 11 lines. On the underground you buy your ticket from a ticket office and give it up when you leave the station.

In Moscow or Saint-Petersburg you must buy a counter from the ticket office and fit it into the slot to go through the turnstile. One can also use a travelling ticket in public transport, (travel/pass)

At a Bus Stop

A: Excuse me, what bus do I take to Hyde Park, please.

B: Take the 79 A.

A: Does it stop here?

B: Yes, one has just left.

A: How long will it take me to get there?

B: It'll take you about half an hour to get there at this time of the day. There is a lot of traffic now.

Look, bus 79 A is coming.

A: Thank you ever so much.

Asking the way

A: Excuse me, how do I get to the center of the city?

B: Which part of the center do you want?

A: The Gostiny Dvor.

B: Take a bus or the underground. If you want to get there quickly take the underground at Pionerskaya.

A: Thanks a lot.
