Vanity Fair

I would like to tell a story which I have read recently, it is called «Vanity Fair» by William Thackeray. William Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India, in 1811. Thackeray’s early novels, Catherine and The Luck of Barry Lyndon, were not successful. But his novel «Vanity Fair» is without doubt his greatest work.

As for tittle it is ambiguous. To tell the truth, I did not want to read it at first, but when I read some pages, I realize that it is very mysterious and very breathtaking.

Vanity Fair is a very vain, wicked, foolish place, full of all sorts of falseness and pretence. It is a place where you gamble and get into debt, and wait for your rich aunt to die. A place where you swear undying love to your sweet heart, and write a love letter to someone else the next day. It is a place where cunning and lies bring rewards. It is a place where men go to war, and women fall in love, it is a place of laughter, tears, danger and excitement.

Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley are starting out on the great adventure of Vanity Fair.

Becky Sharp or just Becky was small and thin, with a pale face and light red hair. She had a blush on her cheeks. Her eyes were large and green and very attractive, especially to men. And I must confess that there is one quote which I liked very much: «...she was made to shine». To tell the truth, she was very charming and effective. She was very intelligent and knew a lot of things that is why, she was admired by many wealthy men.

By the way, Becky hated the school. She argued and fought with headmistress and was jealous of young ladies there.

She was a great liar in the world. She could pretend to be kind girl, but she was not. Becky was very posessive, determined and hostile.

As for her private life, she got marriage Rawdon Crawley. Well, if I tell that she loved him, I talk nonsense. She did not love him, she loved his money. Their marriage was desperate and and not undying. She loved money. She loved it very much; she became very successful among powerful societies. Women were jealous of her unbelievable appearance.

She had a son, she did not love him, and she loves only herself. A wealthy and powerful man visited her house very often. Becky obtained brilliants almost every day from him. But, nor money, nor success, nor brilliants and splendid life, nothing brought happiness. Her husband cought she in a lie, so Rebecca became unhappy and insulted.

To my mind, this story is a perfect example of life wealthy people. They do not have happiness, do not have pure love, and do not have devoted friends. They sell and buy each other. When someone loses prestige, he stops to be «friend». And I think that this book is very breathtaking and interesting. I was reading it in a burst of inspiration.

As for me, I am deeply convinced that only pure and innocent love can bring happiness and success. When you surround by faithful intimate friends you happy. You can achieve all goals in your life. If you want to make friends quickly and easily you should not criticize, condemn or complain. Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a person’s precious pride, hurts his sense of important and arouses resentment. Moreover, you should give sincere appreciation, not flattery. If you follow these principles, you will have a lot of real friends and achieve success in your life.
