II. Give the English equivalents of the following words and word combinations. Recall the situations where they were used:

V. Answer the following questions:

1) What did the story begin with? 2) How did Freddy meet Eliza? 3) What did you get to know about Eliza? 4) How did she react on the situation with flowers? What was Freddy’s reaction? 5) Why did people suppose that a man writing after Eliza was a detective? 6) What was that man? Why was he writing after Eliza? 7) Was he interested in Eliza? Why? 8) Who did Colonel Pickering happen to meet there? 9) Why did Eliza get exited? 10) What was her song about?

VI. What places of central London did you get to know about? What are they famous for? Find extra information to present it to the group. Find the map of London. Define the parts of it. What part is known as rich area and as poor area.

VII. Find examples in Eliza’s speech that demonstrate her accent. For example, “Aoooow” instead of “Oh” – is am example of a low style.

VIII. Characterize each person whom you’ve read about in the first chapter.

IX. Summarize the information from the chapter.

Chapters 2 - 3

I. Choose a paragraph of 7-10 lines; give a good reading and literate translation of it.

II. Give the English equivalents of the following words and word combinations. Recall the situations where they were used:

1) испытывать затруднение попасть в неприятность; 2) соблазн; 3) голова идет кругом; 4) обеспокоиться \ взволноваться; 5) общаться с кем-либо; 6) жить своим умом.

III. Study the active vocabulary, recall the situations they were used and make up your own sentences with them.

IV. Say whom these utterances belong to and under what circumstances they are said. How they characterize the speaker.

1) “Send the bill to Buckingham Palace”; 2) “Has she got an interesting accent?”; 3) “ I’m bringing your business, aren’t I?”; 4) “Take it or leave it”; 5) “I’ll turn this thing into a real lady”; 6) “And you can’t just take a girl off the street like that”; 7) “He’s strange – a bit wrong in the head, he is”; 8) “When I’ve finished with her, we can throw her back into the street”.

V. Say what of the characters are more to your liking and less. Why.

VI. Summarize the information from the chapters.

Chapter 4

I. Choose a paragraph of 7-10 lines; give a good reading and literate translation of it.

II. Find out the meaning of the following words, explain them in English, say what situations they refer to and use in the sentences of your own.

1) local news; 2) to do well for oneself; 3) an honest sort of man; 4) a very clever tongue; 5) to pay back for smth; 6) by mistake; 7) to be tired; 8) not to believe one’s ears; 9) for all the jewels in the crown; 10) to beg for smth.

III. Find the sentences describing how Higgins taught her to speak a good language.

IV. Find the sentences that Eliza practiced. Learn them by heart and pronounce them perfectly.

V. Say whom these utterances belong to and under what circumstances they are said.



1) “I always knew it”; 2) “Take her away”; 3) “You hold your tongue, my girl”; 4) “Is everything all right, sir?”; 5) “Eliza, you go on with your work”.

VI. Read the text of the song that Eliza sings. Is it popular? Find the whole text of the song and the song itself. Learn it by heart.

VII. Summarize the information from the chapter.

 

Chapter 5

I. Choose a paragraph of 7-10 lines; give a good reading and literate translation of it.

II. Write down the key words of the chapter and explain them in English

III. Answer the questions:

1) Who and why met at Ascot? 2) Did Freddy recognize that he had met the girl before? 3) Did Eliza cope with her accent during the races? What was the reaction of people on it?

IV. Recall the situations when these sentences were used:

1) When my friends do meet him, I never see them again. 2) Freddy couldn’t take his eyes off her. 3) “How kind of you”. 4) Mrs Pearce looked out.

V. Retell the information of the chapter in Freddy’s name.

VI. Read the song that came into Freddy’s head. What is it about. How does it characterize him. Translate the song into Russian to make a poem.

VII. Summarize the information from the chapter.

 

 

Chapter 6.

I. Choose a paragraph of 7-10 lines; give a good reading and literate translation of it.

II. Write down the adjectives the author uses to describe Eliza.

III. Prepare 5 questions to the chapter and be ready to answer them.

IV. Explain the meaning oft he following words, recall the situations they were used and use them in your own sentences.

1) a doorman; 2) to call out; 3) to stand without moving; 4) slippers; 5) to be good to smb; 6) to worry about.

V. What do you think Eliza will do. What would you do if you were in her shoes?

VI. Describe the picture on page 27.

VII. Summarize the information from the chapter.

 

Chapters 7-8

I. Choose a paragraph of 7-10 lines; give a good reading and literate translation o fit.

II. Answer the questions:

1) What was Freddy’s feeling towards Eliza? Prove it, using the text. 2) Did the flower-sellers recognize Eliza on the square? Why? 3) What was her father going to do? What was Eliza’s attitude to it? Ho can you characterize their relations (prove it using the text) 4) Where did Eliza go from Higgins? 5) Were Higgins and Pickering upset that Eliza had gone away? 6) What can you conclude from the dialogue between Eliza and Higgins about their attitude to each other? 7) Do you think that Eliza return to Higgins? What would you being in her shoes?

III. Find in chapter 7 the use of the verb to come with prepositions. Translate them, recall the situations. Make up the story (situation) of your own where all of them should be used.

IV. Read the song on page 30 and the comments of the author to it. Write down the unknown words and explain them in English. Translate the song.

V. Find the sentences describing Eliza’s and Higgin’s feelings. Comment on them.

VI. Say whose utterances these are, translate them and give your opinion of them.

1) “She belongs to me”. 2) “They ’ve got heads full of wood, stupid things!” 3) “Never said thank you” 4) “How much time have I still got?” 5) “Don’t you try that game on me” 6) “You’ve paid me back now” 7) “You turn everything against me”8) “Freddy is a good for nothing ” 9) “I can look after myself without you” 10) “ You want me to be in love with you or something, do you?”

VII. Write down the underlined words from ex.6 and make up a small situation of your own with each word-combination.

VIII. Summarize the information from the chapters.

 

Chapter 9

II. Find all the sentences with the following words, translate them. Make up the sentences with each word combination:

1) can’t stop doing smth; 2) to get accustomed to smth; 3) a heartless thing to do; 4) a most forgiving man; 5) to walk round and round; 6) to bully smb all the time; 7) so wonderfully, so terribly; 8) to laugh loudly; 9) very softly; 10) to understand so well.

III. Summarize the information from the chapter.

IV. Summarize the information from the whole book.
