# 7 SCHOOL TRADITIONS

1.Let’s talk about school traditions. What is the role of school traditions in your life?

Well, first of all I’d like to say that pupils spend at school the most important years in their lives. Their character and perception of the world are formed there. In this period they grow up, get stronger, develop their talents and skills and begin to understand life. School helps them to do this because school isn’t just studying but a place where you can make friends, communicate with them and just have fun. And keeping school traditions provides us with such an opportunity. I suppose school traditions are very important in everybody’s school life because they broaden our outlook, unite pupils, give a strong sense of belonging to a community and in general they make our life more interesting and happier.

2. Does your school have some special traditions?

Definitely! There are a lot of great traditions in my school! Our pupils are always fond of taking part in extra-class activities such as concerts, debate clubs, intellectual games, sports competitions, picnics and excursions. That’s why our school organizes such events for us, mainly on Saturdays, when we are free from lessons and uniform. These activities are popular with pupils, teachers and parents as they help to create a kind of team spirit. One of my favourite traditions is Christmas Fair which is arranged annually in December. It is usually held on Saturday. Students prepare different stuff, bake yammy things and sell it. There are a lot of visitors to our Gymnasium on this day and inside the school everyone can feel a joyful and friendly atmosphere. Also I would like to mention our literature parties which are organized by our English teachers. They usually arrange this event in February. The students, who are interested in literature, gather together, discuss literature works, recite poems by famous British writers. That’s a lot of fun!

3. What questions can you ask a British teenager about his/her school traditions?

1. Does your school have a lot of traditions?

2. What traditions do you like most of all?

3. To keep school traditions is very important, isn’t it?

4. What school tradition would you personally like to create in your school?

4. Which school celebration will you recommend your British friend to attend?

I would recommend my British friend to visit us on the 1st of September. On this day pupils and teachers all over the country start a new academic year. They come to school after a long. It is a great day of a reunion with your classmates when we share our emotions and impressions of our summer holidays. Traditionally the administration meet the pupils near the entrance of the Gymnasium and the headmaster gives a speech. Then all classes with teachers go to their classrooms and have a very interesting lesson which covers mainly patriotic topics like being a citizen of Belarus, Minsk – Hero City, achievements and aspirations of our country. Though all pupils understand that a new tough school year is coming on this day everybody’s positive and happy because we are full of energy and enthusiasm and we meet our friends.

5. Do you think it is important to follow our school traditions? Why?

I certainly do! School traditions help us not only to find friends and get on friendly terms with new people. They encourage us to reveal our creative and intellectual potential. Participating in different school activities we can display our abilities. School traditions give us a chance to involve each pupil into socially useful activities and they are aimed at establishing and developing good relations between students and teachers. That’s why I’m pretty sure that to follow our school traditions is very important.
