PARTNER
The National Association “Giacche Verdi”(Green Jackets), also known as A.N.Gi.V., is a Voluntary association of Civil / Environmental Protection acknowledged by Ministry of Environment. Active in Sicily since 2000, it is a non-profit organization that works in the social field for charity and social solidarity. In Sicily, as in other 14 Italian regions, “Giacche Verdi” work using as priority means the horses in the following areas: • Social Field: on behalf of weaker classes of population, where horses can be mediator par excellence to tear down the barriers, also invisible ones, separing disabled from able-bodied society. • Environment protection: through surveillance of protected areas (parks,forest reserves, oasis), especially in areas non accessible by vehicles and; raising awareness among tourists on the issue of respect of forest and environment. • Education path in schools: through project of safeguard and conservation of biodiversity, reforestation to fight environment decay. • Civil protection: trough prevention of natural disasters (blazes, hydrogeological instability and other event caused by human kind) and research of missing in areas hardly reachable by other means. One of the most importand field of action is the use of horses for the promotion of territory and Sicily Identity for a better knowing, appreciation and a conscious fruition of forests. In particular Giacche Verdi takes care and promote the Nebrodi national park that, thanks to its great natural-cultural-environmental value, represents an ideal site for trekking and horse-tourism lovers.
WORK
Volunteers will support the association in the implementation of the project “Il Mio regno per l’Ambiente” (My kingdom for a better environment, in English). It aims to foster the integration between both disables and non-disabled kids/youngsters (6 – 15 years old) through paths of environmental education. They will be involved in workshops and outdoor activities such as: • Promoting re-use philosophy by realizing products made with recycled materials • Creative painting • Recycled paper making from old newspapers • Equitation school for kids and youngsters • Planting new trees and plants on the workcamp site
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Volunteers will stay at “Coopertiva Terra del Sole” center, where activities will take place. Meals will be prepared by volunteers as a team, in turns.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
The workcamp will take place in the wonderful landscape of Calatabiano/Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. It is closed to Natural Reserve of Fiumefreddo (Cold River), 600 meters far from the seaside (Marina di Cottone beach, CEE blue flag for crystalline water), surrounded by uncontaminated nature with awesome views (giant palm grove, Etna Volcano visible from the balcony…). In their free time volunteer scan visit the amazing Taormina (25km), Catania (1 hour far) or have excursions on Etna volcano.
REQUIREMENTS
Working clothes (something you don’t mind to get dirty), a sleeping bag or bedsheets and blanket. We DO appreciate creativity, ability to self-organize and working in team, spirit of initiative, good will and ability to adapt. Volunteers are expected to inform on arrival the camp leaders about particular illness/ allergies/food intolerance.
