It is simple (once you learn to read)

Reading

It is simple (once you learn to read)

No special equipment is needed (except your eyes) Reading is not physically demanding (if the books are not heavy)

You have to rely on your own imagination (all sounds and pictures exist inside your head only) Your freedom is not limited: you chose time and place, you can always stop, think it over, go back or read it again.

Movies

It is normally associated with going out or having a special evening together and can be rather expensive. Normally you don’t go to see movies alone. Movies are increasingly expensive to produce and tend to focus on special effects. They are increasingly viewed as roller coasters (аттракционы) designed to thrill or shock. The theatre facility and other people in the audience may influence you too. You cannot control a movie, interact with it, delay or stop it.

TV

(on TV – по телевидению)

[1]

TV is similar to watching movies at home but at its best the experience is weaker and spread out in time. You can watch TV all day. The good thing is that you can always switch it off.

TV viewing comes with a lot of distraction and interruption including commercial breaks.

The most popular TV form is a serial (or series) which may be “endless”. TV originated as family entertainment soon to become a full family member and a sort of a substitute parent for kids. People often say that TV is stupid and that a lot of TV is bad for you. To To enjoy TV one must sit in front of the box and maintain eye contact. They say that TV and the remote control turn you into a couch potato. Today cable TV can provide you with dozens of channels and there are often several TV sets in one family.

radio (on the radio – по радио)

With radio you have greater freedom to move around or do various work. It is normal to listen to the radio while driving a car. Originally radio was mostly talk but nowadays it is mostly music or, better say, background noise some people take for granted. There are many radio channels but radio as a media is much smaller than TV.

Internet (on the Internet – в Интернете)

A rather new media that provides instant information or entertainment. It is also popular as a communication tool. Service depends on the computer hardware and the connection. Its content is unedited and extremely varied. It can be very helpful and efficient when you know exactly what you are looking for but can waste your time if you don’t or you are just being idle.. When you use the Internet you unknowingly provide information about yourself. There is high danger that you may be tricked or become victim of a crook.

[1] Channel surfing (also known as channel hopping or zapping) практика переключения каналов телевизора на дистанционном пульте (zapper). Особенно часто зеппинг используют заядлые телезрители, которых в США называют «диванными картофелинами» (англ. couch potatoes).
