In 1831 the gallery is supplemented with a large number of paintings bequeathed to the collector Holuell-Carr, Andrea del Sarto. In 1831 there were 105 in the gallery of paintings.

 

In 1831 began the construction of a building designed by Wilkins on the north side of Trafalgar Square. In 1838 the gallery was officially opened to the public.

 

In 1836 was published the first catalog of the entire collection in two volumes, which were given engraved reproduction of all 114 pictures with a detailed description of each.

 

In 1847, Robert Gallery of Veron gave 156 paintings by English artists. In 1851 after the death of the artist Joseph William Turner Mallorda according to his will passed 300 of his paintings and 19,000 drawings and watercolors. In 1857, acquired a collection of Lombardi-Baldi (paintings of Duccio, Margarito of Arezzo, Paolo Uccello).

 

In 1869 the gallery has received five new rooms.

 

In 1875 the gallery is supplemented with a collection of 94 paintings by Wynn Ellis, which he bequeathed to the National Gallery. Thus the number of pictures in the gallery has reached thousands.

 

In 1876 was built the east wing galleries.
