Can / Could / Shall I help you with your report?

Shall

Will / Would

Should / Ought to

Offers

Can / Could / Shall I help you with your report?

Requests

Will / Would / Can / Could you..? = We ask smb else to do sth for us. Would and could are more polite.

Will / can you keep this chair for me?

We often reply with: “I would be happy / glad” or “Certainly”

Advice

Should / ought to = I advise you to / you had better do sth

You should / ought to be more careful.

Must express strong advice.

Suggestions

Can / Could / Shall we go to the market today?

Criticism

Ought to / should + perfect infinitive = it would have been better if you had…

We use this structure to show that smb did the wrong thing in the past.

You should / ought to try harder. (but you didn’t, so your team lost.)

Asking for suggestions or instructions

- Where shall we go tonight? – We can go to the theatre.
