Anne Frank

Anne Frank was born on 12 June 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. Her parents were Otto and Edith Frank. Margot, born on 16 February 1926, was Anne’s older sister. Anne had a strong ambition: to be a writer. She hoped to write a book that everyone would read.

In 1933 things were changing in Germany. There were some people that wanted to be for Germans only; this group was called the Nazi Party and they were led by Adolf Hitler. He wanted everyone to have blond hair and blue eyes. Otto and Edith decided to move somewhere else because they did not fit in the description. They moved to the Nederlands (Holland) when Anne was four.

They were living happily in Holland. The girls were happily settled in school and Otto Frank’s business was doing well. On 12 June 1942 Anne had her 13th birthday and one of the presents from her parents was a diary. At that time life for Jews was difficult because they were not allowed to use public transport and go to public place like swimming pools. They also had to wear a gold Star of David to show that they were Jews. Despite all those things Anne enjoyed her life and was looking forward to the future.

On 6th July 1942 Otto decided that the family would go into the hiding as the things were getting worse every day and the German army had invaded Holland. Anne took with her books to read, hair brush, her diary (Kitty), a collection of pictures of her favourite film stars. She had to fit all of these things in her small school bad so she ended up wearing all of the clothes she wanted to take. The place where they were hiding was an anne of rooms above Otto’s office in Amsterdam, the Nederlands.

The family hid there for 25 months with the van Dels family and Fritz Pfeffer (8 people altogether) before they were discovered (on 4 August 1944). Someone told the police where they were hiding. After they were found they were transported to Auschwitz, death camp in Poland. Anne’s father was sent to another part of the camp and never saw his daughters and wife ever again. Anne and Margot were later sent to another camp called Bergen-Belsen. Anne’s mother died in January 1945bfrom starvation and typhoid. Margot and Anne died from typhoid, both in March 1945. Anne was only 3 weeks away from her 16th birthday when she died.

After the war Miep Gies, who helped the Franks to hide, found Anne’s diary and gave it to Otto Frank (the only survivor from all who were in hiding). He decided to publish the diary, and in 1947 it was published in Dutch. Since then it was translated into over 60 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.
