Next time we’re going to talk about meeting people. This is supposed to be an easy topic so it doesn’t require much preparation. We are going to divide into groups and act out different situations.

Questions to consider:

Where do you meet new people?

Do you have an acquaintances and friends from other countries?

How do people greet each other in Saint Petersburg and other parts of Russia?

How do people in other countries greet each other?

What are the differences in greeting people in formal and informal situations?

Do men and women greet each other in a different way?

 

Vocabulary and useful phrases:

acquaintance noun

a person one knows slightly, but who is not a close friend: a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

one's slight knowledge of or friendship with someone: that is how my acquaintance with Herbert started

make the acquaintance of (or make someone's acquaintance)

meet someone for the first time and become only slightly familiar: they are anxious to make your acquaintance.

to greet verb [ with obj. ]

give a polite word or sign of welcome or recognition to (someone) on meeting

to introduce verb

to tell someone another person’s name when they meet for the first time

Have you two been introduced?

introduce someone to someone: I would like to introduce you to my friend Martin.

introduce yourself: He introduced himself as (=said his name was) Major Desmond Morton.

to shake hands In formal situations, men shake hands.

to spell (one’s name) My last name is Evans. Could you spell it, please? E-V-A-N-S
