Headlines use short words, in preference to long ones.

Generally use the simple tenses of verbs and the present simple tense is very frequent.

Sometimes the very vrevity of headlines makes them abiguous.

EXAMPLES:

 

'Raw Deal' on London Rates – Unfair treatment of London through rating system.

Miners ban overtime – Miners are refusing to work overtime.

Car Import Curb 'Would hit Britain' – Controls on the import of cars would make Britain suffer.

Japan Leadership Struggle Hots Up – Japan is becoming more intense.

Action Man Malraux Dies – Malraux, who was a man of action, has died.

Police Get Bank Girl Killer Clues – The police have found clues to the identity of the man who killed the girl who worked in a bank.

Let's have a look at some of the features of this style of writing.

Firstly, there are different ways of reporting the source of a story.

It was revealed that ….

… claims a report.

A report shows that ….

It is feared that ….

A mystery surrounds ….

It is claimed that ….

Sometimes a story uses reported speech, and at other times quotation marks are inserted to show the exact words spoken.

 

Aonther feature – adjectives and nouns are often strung together to make the writing shorter and snappier:

A desperate do-or-die gamble.

A world-wide burst of anger.

 

This phrases are economically written.

 

«Human interest angle».

 

Some detailes about person's age, or appearance, or jobs, or income, or their role in the family, or these points may be combined.
