for me... i would let the prisoners take their choices.... if they want to die, kill them, if they want torture (пытки), torture them, if they want to live 50 years in prison just do what they want, give them the 3 wise choices and if the prisoner chooses 50 years and lived 1 year, and asks for death, then give him the death! That’s a fair way for states and the convict!

The death penalty can deter murder and other serious crimes. People fear nothing more than death. Therefore, nothing will deter a criminal more than the fear of death.

Putting people in prison gives them a chance of parole (or the small chance of escape), meaning they can commit more crimes. That may lead to more deaths and financial losses. Capital punishment means there is no chance of the criminal committing another crime.

There is no credible evidence that the death penalty deters crime more effectively than long terms of imprisonment. States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws. And states that have abolished capital punishment show no significant changes in either crime or murder rates.

Deserved punishment protects society morally by restoring the order, making the wrongdoer pay a price equivalent to the harm he has done.

The death penalty is immoral because there is no justification for the person`s taking of a life of another person. It is simply barbaric to allow people to be killed by the state even if they have committed violent crimes.

The Universal declaration of Human Rights states that the right to life is an inherent right!

Retribution is just another word for revenge, and the desire for revenge is one of the lowest human emotions – perhaps sometimes understandable, but not really a rational response to a critical situation. To kill the person who has killed someone is to commit the crime again.

In some cases it is better for a person to be executed than to rot in jail during all his life. In some countries the jails and the treatment is disastrous.

It can be viewed that life in prison with little freedom and poor quality of life is a better punishment and deterrent to criminals than death row.

No system of justice can produce results which are 100% certain all the time. Mistakes will be made in any system which relies upon human testimony for proof.

However, the risk of making a mistake with the extraordinary due process applied in death penalty cases is very small, and there is no credible evidence to show that any innocent persons have been executed at least since the death penalty was reactivated in 1976.

Modern system of justice is not perfect. No system of justice can produce results which are 100% certain. There is a real possibility of miscarriage of justice. It means that we may kill an innocent person.

Since the reinstatement of the modern death penalty, 87 people have been freed from death row because they were later proven innocent. That is a demonstrated error rate of 1 innocent person for every 7 persons executed.

Criminals could work and do something good for the society they live in.

The fact that blacks and Hispanics are charged with capital crimes out of proportion to their numbers in the general population may simply mean that blacks and Hispanics commit capital crimes out of proportion to their numbers.

No one is surprised to find more men than women in this class.

In 82% of the studies [reviewed], race of the victim was found to influence the likelihood of being charged with capital murder or receiving the death penalty, i.e., those who murdered whites were found more likely to be sentenced to death than those who murdered blacks." - United States General Accounting Office, Death Penalty Sentencing, February 1990

The financial cost of putting people to death, once you consider extra appeals, additional procedures etc, can often be more than the cost of putting a criminal in prison for life.

The cost of the death penalty is so expensive (at least $2 million per case?), that we must choose life without parole ('LWOP') – без досрочного освобождения at a cost of $1 million for 50 years.

In California, the annual cost of the present death penalty system is currently $137 million USD. By contrast, a system of life without parole would cost $11.5m.

Некоторые виды смертной казни могут заставить человека страдать.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL Amnesty International: Death Penalty Opinion Piece 2012.

Last year, only 20 out of 198 countries carried out executions – a figure down by more than a third from a decade ago. 90 per cent of UN member states were execution-free, while 140 countries have now abolished the death penalty in law or practice.

When Amnesty International began its global campaign against the death penalty 35 years ago – opposing it in all cases, regardless of the crime, offender, or method of execution – the world’s 16 abolitionist countries were then the minority.
