Part 3

Task B1-B6

You will hear a man talking about US universities. For each question B1 -B6, fill in the missing information in the numbered space. You will need to write a word or a short phrase of no more than 17 symbols. You will hear the recording twice. You now have 30 seconds in which to look at the questions.

Now we are ready to start.

We continue our series of reports about American colleges and universities. Today, we are going to talk about one of the oldest universities in the United States.

This university began in 1636 in the state of Massachusetts, near Boston. The area was an English colony where mainly Puritans lived. They came from England in 1620 and created a religious community. That was the main reason why in 1638 the university was named after a religious leader who gave the college four-hundred books and donated a large sum of money. Today, it has more than ninety libraries containing about twelve-million books. About four million of them are in foreign languages. The university includes two colleges, and ten schools. Its medical, law and business schools are among the best-known in the country. It also offers graduate programs in government, education, religion and science.

Many years ago, the university students were all white men. Most of them were from rich families from northeastern states. That has changed. Today almost fifty percent of students are women. And men and women have equal rights to study at the university. This year, about thirty-three percent of the first-year students are from different ethnic groups. These include African Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans.

More than nineteen thousand students are studying at the university this year. More than three thousand are from outside the United States. They are mainly from Asia and Europe. Five years ago it was most popular with students from South America and Africa.

To find out more about the university, you can go to the university Internet Web site.
