Polysemy, synonymy and homonymy

One of the most complicated problems in semasiology is to define the place of homonyms among other relationships of words. In a simple code each sign has only one meaning and it’s meaning is associated with only one sign. But this ideal is not realized in natural language. When several related meanings are associated with the same form, the word is called polysemantic. When 2 or more unrelated meanings are associated with the same form, these words are homonyms. When 2 or more forms are associated with the same or nearly the same meaning, they are called the synonyms.

EXAMPLES

1. AIR – HEIR (воздух – наследник): fresh air; the heir to the throne;

His heir was a nephew, son of his brother killed in a motor accident, not a bad boy, but not a chip off the old block, no, sir, far from it... (W. S. Maugham, ‘Creatures of Circumstance’, ‘The Colonel’, ‘Lady’) — Его наследником был племянник, сын брата, погибшего в автомобильной катастрофе. Неплохой парень, но не похож на своего отца, совсем не похож, сэр...

It suggested closed portholes (это означало закрытые иллюминаторы; to suggest — предлагать; означать) and the night air rigidly excluded (и духота ночью: «ночной воздух жестко исключенный»).

2. BEAT – BEET (бить – свекла): to beat the drums; beets and carrots;

"Beat Swords Into Ploughshares" is the motto of the day reflecting the... people's will to peace. (‘New World Review’) — "Перековать мечи на орала" - вот девиз нашего времени, выражающий волю народа к миру.

Miss Susie Thing and Hubert Willy walked up in front of Preacher Hawshaw. Hubert's face was as red as a beet but I couldn't see Miss Susie's because she had her face almost buried in the big bunch of flowers. (E. Caldwell, ‘Georgia Boy’, ch. II) — Мисс Сузи Тинг и Хьюберт Уилли стояли перед проповедником Хаушо. Хьюберт был красный как свекла, а лицо мисс Сузи я не мог разглядеть, потому что она уткнулась носом в большой букет цветов.

3. FIR – FUR (ель – мех): pines and fir trees; a fir cone; a fur coat; natural fur;

Скинув с себя груз, Софронников умылся прохладной водой озера, выбрал поплотнее тень под ёлкой и прилёг отдохнуть. Через полчаса он снова был на ногах. (Г. Марков, Грядущему веку) — Throwing off his pack, he washed in the cold lake water, found a thick shadow under a fir tree, and lay down to rest. Half an hour later he was up again.

he would show those crooks. Now he had a real fighter behind him - a man like himself. Now, by George, the fur would begin to fly. (Th. Dreiser, ‘The Titan’, ch. VII) —...он покажет этим жуликам! Теперь он не один: с ним рядом настоящий боец, такой же закаленный, как он сам. Ну и драка будет - только держись!

4. PRINCIPAL – PRINCIPLE (главный – принцип): principal cause; a man of principle;

The principal claims to have worked his way up from boy clerk. (Ch. Brontë, ‘The Professor’, ‘Preface’) — Ректор сказал, что он начал свою карьеру, служа клерком.

When doctors disagree in this way it seems fair to suppose that the underlying difference is less one of principle than one of personal taste. (L. Strachey, ‘Characters and Commentaries’, ‘The Old Comedy’) — Когда мнения авторитетов расходятся именно таким образом, можно предположить, что принципиального расхождения между ними нет, все дело в личных пристрастиях.

5. TEAR [tiər] – TEAR [teər] (слеза – рвать): tears in her eyes; to tear up his letter;

..she ran the gamut of tears to anger, through denial and cajolery back to tears again. (W. Faulkner, ‘Collected Short Stories’, ‘Centaur in Brass’) —...его жена то плакала, то сердилась, то все отрицала, то переходила к лести, а потом опять плакала.

You cannot read Candida: you know very well that you have been strictly ordered not to read until your eyes are better. Wild horses shall not tear that script from me... (B. Shaw, ‘Ellen Terry and Bernard Shaw. A Correspondence’, Letter to E. Terry, 2 Oct., 1896) — Вам нельзя читать "Кандиду". Вы же хорошо знаете, что вам строго запрещено читать, пока ваше зрение не улучшится. Эту рукопись вы у меня и силой не отнимете.
