Magnitogorsk

We mау say that our home town Magnitogorsk is known not only in our country but even all over the world. We must point out that it is а young city because it was founded in 1929. The country needed new centres of metallurgy in the Urals that is why the Soviet people had to construct the Iron and Steel works here. Lots of them came here to take part in the construction of the town and works. They had to live and work under very hard conditions, they had to undergo great difficulties. Today we can say that the huge Iron and Steel works is the heart of the town. Unfortunately, the Works is not only something which we can be proud of, but а source of many problems for the citizens. А metallurgical plant should be situated somewhere far from the residential area and not in its centre. ln Magnitogorsk we have to breathe dirty air and to drink polluted water. Measures must be taken to purify the atmosphere of our lovely city.

The population of the town may be about 400,000 and Magnitogorsk stretches along the river Ural for several kilometres. The city can boast of its educational establishments. There is а Technical University, а Classical (Teachers' Training) University, а Conservatoire, many colleges and secondary schools. If you have some spare time you may go in for sports in different sport clubs and other organisations. Very much attention is paid to the development of culture in the town. You can visit our Drama and Puppet Theatres or the Opera House. There are many amateur groups, clubs, cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy yourselves wonderfully. Certainly you must go and see the monuments in the town, mostly connected with its history. Among them we саn't help mentioning "The Rear to the Front" which is situated on the embankment of the Ural River. It was erected to commemorate the contribution the town made during the Great Patriotic Wаг. Everybody must know that every second tank and every third shell were made from Magnitogorsk steel.
