Местоимение it может выступать как:

1) личное во избежание повторения существительного, обозначающего неодушевлённый предмет.

Cр.: Learn the rule. It is very important.

I don’t understand the rule. Explain it again.

2) указательное в значении “это”.

Cр.: What is it? – It is a violin.

3) безличное в роли подлежащего в безличных предложениях, где не может быть указано действующее лицо или предметный производитель действия.

Cр.: It is 8 o’clock now. It is cold outside. It is difficult to explain this phenomenon.

It seems to me that it is time to go.

4) усилительное для выделения отдельных членов предложения.

Cр.: It is Popov who invented the radio.– Именно Попов изобрел радио.

 

EXERCISES

I. Make the sentences plural.

1. This is my relative. 2.This was my nephew. 3. Is this your niece? 4. That is my cousin. 5. Is that your sister-in-law? 6. This man is a friend of mine. 7. That girl isn’t my friend. 8. That boy isn’t my brother. 9. This is a father. 10. That is a mother.

 

II. Complete the following sentences.

IX. Translate into Russian paying special attention to the words “that” and “it”.

1. This is my brother and that was my cousin. 2. Two years ago our family lived in that old block of flats. 3. I like to play with the dog that my grandmother has presented me. 4. I study at the Conservatoire that my mother graduated from 20 years ago. 5. I know that my grandfather took part in the Great Patriotic War. 6. My mother thinks that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. 7. Nobody thought that the book would be so popular. 8. The article that I am writing now describes our family. 9. In our country house we don’t have a heating system like that in a town flat. 10. We often think that our problem is more difficult than that of our friend. 11. It is not an easy question, I must say. 12. My sister studies French at the University and knows it rather well. 13. It is pleasant to sit at the burning fireplace in cold weather. 14. It is almost eleven o’clock. 15. Our country house is rather big, and there is a lot of work in it. 16. My father is very fond of me, but it is my younger sister who is an apple of his eye. 17.
