1. Comment on the narrative style of Graham Greene.

2. The author does not present the story chronologically. He focuses on one specific moment, the conversation in the restaurant and uses dialogue to provide important information about the past and to speculate about the future. How does this manipulation of plot influence the impact of the story? Comment on the narrative mode of the story.

3. Dwell on the linguistic means used by the author to portray the characters.

4. Conflict is an important element in this story. What kind of conflict is the young man experiencing? What about the girl? Does the scene he witnesses provoke conflict in the narrator?

5. What does the author gain by the fact that the narrator himself is a writer?

6. What do we gather about the young people’s relationship due to the way their conversation is presented?

7. Suspense is often created by denying the reader information that is essential to his understanding of a story. How effective is the atmosphere of the present story in maintaining ‘suspense’?

8. Why do you think the gentlemen were Japanese, & not French or, say, German?

9. What goal does the author pursuit in describing the gentlemen several times throughout the story? Consider the last comment made by the young girl and explain how it throws a revealing light on the plot.

10. Comment on the irony of the story “The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen”.

Before you make an overall analysis, indicate the following SDs & try to explain their role in the story, if there is any:

- …her face was pretty & petite in a Regency way, oval like a miniature.

- …like the mutter from the aviary, while everyone bent towards him & smiled & listened & I couldn’t help attending to him myself.

- She came alongside & raked him fore & aft...

- The girl looked at them, & then she looked at me, but I think she saw only the future.

- I wanted to say to her, Are you certain your publisher is telling you the truth...by performance & not by promise.

- …he would have fallen an easy victim to the first dark eyes in Naples.

- Would there one day be a dozen books on her shelf? They have to be borne without an anesthetic, too.

- I found myself hoping that her Chelsea Set would prove to be a disaster…

- …Mrs. Humphrey Ward of her generation

- … abrasive (powers of observation)
