The Past Perfect Tense

Прошедшее совершенное время используется для обозначения:

1) действия в прошлом, которое предшествовало другому действию в прошлом или произошло до определенного момента в прошлом:

By the end of the year they had finally got their pay rise.

By the time Liz turned 16, she had already left school.

When I came home Kate had gone out shopping.

We wanted to talk to the babysitter but she had just left.

When we got back we found that the babysitter had already gone home.

As soon as they had sold their old Porshe they bought a Honda.

 

2) действия, которое началось в прошлом и все еще длилось в определенный момент в более поздний момент в прошлом – с глаголами состояния.

I knew the Horns had been married for nearly fifty years.

I was sure they had known each other since childhood.

George made no answer and we found that he had been asleep for some time.

Прошедшее совершенное продолженное время используется для обозначения:

1) действия, которое началось в далеком прошлом и все еще продолжалось к определенному (более позднему) моменту в прошлом:

How long had you been living in London before you moved to Leeds?

Tom had been watching the football match for nearly an hour when the Т. V. screen suddenly went blank.

All the roads were blocked: it had been snowing all night long.

Mary could see that the child had been crying.

He had been working for over an hour before the auditors turned up.
