Unit 1

9. Irrelevant – не имеет значения (неуместный) - not connected with or relevant to something:

* An irrelevant comment.

10. With open arms – с распростертыми объятьями - with great affection or enthusiasm:

* Schools have welcomed such arrangements with open arms.

** We welcome immigrants with open arms.

 

11. To stand for – заменять - be an abbreviation of or symbol for:

* BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation.

Unit 2A

 

1. To give up – бросать - stop doing or consuming something:

* I’ve decided to give up drinking

** Lawyer has given up his job(…)

 

2. To set out – отправиться - begin a journey.

* In survey work, it’s often necessary to set out right angles or perpendicular lines on the field.

** He has set out on his South American adventure.

 

3. Lie ahead – впереди - be going to happen:

* I’m excited by what lies ahead.

** (…) Paraguay and Uruguay is lie ahead.

 

4. So far – до сих пор - to a certain limited extent:

* Jabs and pills can protect you only so far.

5. To get by – выживать - manage with difficulty to live or accomplish something:

* He had just enough money to get by.

6. Sole purpose – личная цель - the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists:

* The purpose of the meeting is to appoint a trustee

7. Way of – способ - by means of:

8. Bringing together – объединять - so as to be united or in agreement:

9. Smth is in my blood – что-то в моей крови - ingrained in or fundamental to one’s character:

* Racing is in his blood

10. To run into – столкнуться, случайно встретиться - collide with, meet by chance:

* I ran into Stasia and Katie on the way home.
