Teacher. I think it’s time to read our letter. Be very attentive, please, because you will answer some questions.

A letter.

Hello, my new friends,

Thank you very much for your letter in which you told me about your school. It was very interesting to read it. I’d like to tell you about winter holidays we like to celebrate.

I must say, that New Year’s Day is not very popular in our country. But Christmas is the greatest holiday. We celebrate it on the twenty-fifth of December. As for me I like it very much. Our winter holidays begin before this date and are called Christmas holidays.

On Christmas Eve we put presents under the Christmas tree. Also when my sister and I go to bed we put stockings near our beds. We know that at Christmas Santa Clause will come and put a gift into it.

On Christmas Day we open our presents and we pull Christmas crackers. There are little presents and funny paper hats in the crackers. We eat turkey and Christmas pudding. And in the evening we sing carrols together.

When do you celebrate Christmas? What do you do at this holiday? Write to me, please and tell about it.

Your friend, Tom

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Teacher. To know more about holidays in English-speaking countries let’s read the text

Holidays in England

During the year English people celebrate many holidays.

The first holiday is New Year’s Day. It is on the first of January. On that day people send good wishes to all their friends. They say to each other: “Happy New Year!”

On Sunday in the middle of March English people celebrate Mother’s Day. This is a holiday of all mothers. On that day they do not go to work and their children bring them flowers and presents.

In England April 1st is April Fool’s Day, the day when you play tricks on people – April Fool tricks. You can play as many April Fool tricks as you want, as long as you play them before twelve o’clock midday. If you play them after twelve o’clock, you are the April Fool!

On the 1st of May English people celebrate May Day. They began to celebrate this holiday in 1890, when the workers from all parts of London went to the demonstration with demand to shorten their working day. That demonstration showed the unity and solidarity of all the working people of London.

Since then, every year on the 1st of May English people organize demonstrations of unity and solidarity with all progressive people in other countries.

On the 25th of December English people celebrate Christmas Day. They like this holiday very much. On that day they sent good wishes and give presents to each other.
