Ex. I. Read the text:

Applying for a Job

The most common way to begin looking for a job is to read job advertisements in newspapers. An applicant can also get information about vacancies listening to the radio or watching TV.

When a company needs to recruit or employ new people, it may decide to advertise the job or a vacant position in the appointments page of a newspaper.

People who are interested can then apply for a job by sending a letter of application and their Curriculum Vitae or Resume containing details of their education and experience. The company will then draw up a shortlist of candidates, who are invited to attend an interview. A Personnel Manager of the company will write the reports after interviewing several candidates for a position in the company and then an appropriate person will be chosen from them.

In Great Britain there is a special service for school leavers, the Career Advisory Service, which helps young people who are looking for their first jobs. Career Officers give practical advice on interview techniques, application forms and letters.

In some countries there are also employment offices which can help to find a job. If you have defined the job and expressed an interest in it you should write an application letter to a prospective employer and the resume. The primary purpose of the application letter is to obtain an interview, but the letter also provides the employer with an example of your communication skills and creates the first impression about you.

The letter of application (sometimes it is called the covering letter) can be as important as the Curriculum Vitae (CV) and it often provides the first direct contact between an applicant and an employer.

If the letter isn’t well written and presented, it will make a poor impression on the reader. Try to imagine the person who will read your letter and focus on him or her. Of course your reader will probably receive many letters applying for the same position. Make your letter the one that will be remembered. Be confident, honest and do your best to show that you have all the qualifications necessary for the job. Obviously, your letter should be neat and free of mistakes.

The letter of application normally contains three or more paragraphs in which you should:

· confirm that you wish to apply and say where you learned about the job, say why you are interested in this position and relate your interests to those in the company

· show that you can contribute to the job by highlighting your most relevant skills and experience, describe your present position and your qualifications

· indicate your willingness to attend an interview (possibly state when you would be free to attend an interview) and tell your reader how to contact you.
