Test 3 Reading Comprehension.

After this passage there are a number of questions each with four suggested answers. Choose the one you think best answers the question.

On the morning of the feast we got the school ready. We built a stage of benches and wood. Mr. Robinson was in the cloakroom slicing boiled ham, where he’d been for the last three hours. Three laughing helpers were putting the meat into sandwiches. Outside John Barraclough had arrived and set up his old field kitchen. He broke sticks across his knee and filled up the boiler with water. Laid out on the wall were thirty-five teapots, freshly washed and drying in the wind. The feast was being prepared and by carrying chairs and fetching water Jack and I made ourselves useful enough to earn a free ticket each.

Punctually at six we returned to the village school. We queued up in the cold, waiting for the doors to open. When they did, it was boots and elbows, no queues we just fought our way in. The school room had been transformed with lamplight and decorations. The long tables were covered with food, cakes, brown buns and ham sandwiches. The two stoves were burning brightly. The helpers had their teapots ready.

We sat down awkwardly and stared at the food. We coughed and waited. Then the white haired priest appeared. We hurried through the prayer and then got our hands on the food and began to eat in any order. Cakes, buns ham it didn’t matter at all. We just worked from one plate to the next. Steaming brown teapots passed up and down and we were so busy that there was little time for conversation. Through the open windows we could see snow falling, it was an excellent sign. We loosened our belts and began to nod at each other. It was going to be a good year.
