Vocabulary tasks:

1. Recollect the situations in which the following words and expressions appear in the text. Give Russian equivalents.

Whitewash; divine discontent and longing; graveled carriage-drive; chaffing; bijou riverside residence; to shove off; oar; to have smth on hand; landing stage; a mean beast; to potter about dry shod; to break out; to dwell on possible trouble ahead; to pause for bite or sup; to wander off the table-cloth a little; an impromptu affair; to punt; to take up; to be bent on smth; wet without and ashamed within; broken with emotion.

2. Use some of these words in the sentences of your own.

3. Find English equivalents to the following:

1. Read the Introduction, use the Internet and other resources to find some information about Kenneth Grahame, his life and creative work. Be ready to speak about it.

2. Prepare good reading and precise translation of the following passages:

‘He thought his happiness was complete…’ – ‘…a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told as last to the insatiable sea.’ (p.5)

3. Ask as many questions as you can on the content of the chapter.

Stylistic tasks:

1. What means does the author use to present the season?

2. What stylistic devices are used to create the atmosphere of spring-cleaning in the house of the Mole?

3. How is the Water Rat presented in the text? What expressive means and stylistic devices are used in his portrait? How does the following expression characterize the Rat’s speech?

‘There is cold chicken inside it,’ replied the Rat briefly; ‘coldtonguecoldhamcoldbeefpickledgherkinssaladfrenchrollscressandwidgespottedmeatgingerbeerlemonadeawater-’ (p.7)

4. Read the passage ‘Nice? It’s the only thing,’ said the Water Rat solemnly… - ‘If you’ve really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together and have a long day of it?’ (pp. 6-7) What speech characteristics can you find in the extract?

5. What characters have you met in the chapter? Give the character sketches of the Rat and the Mole.

Попросить об услуге; не мог не добавить; разразиться смехом; влюбиться с первого взгляда; само собой разумеется; составить компанию.

Reading tasks:

1. Quote the text to prove that:

· the Rat was a sensitive animal;

· the cart of the Toad was beautiful and comfortable;

· the journey impressed the travellers;

· the Rat and the Mole worked hard during the journey.

2. The passage for good reading and translation:

‘They were strolling along the high road easily…’ – ‘…and then dwindled to a speck in the far distance, changed back into a droning bee once more.’ (p.24-5)

3. Make up a short dialogue about the journey of your dream, using the vocabulary of the chapter you’ve read.

 

Stylistic tasks:

1. Why is the song ‘Ducks’ Ditty’ cited? What other means are used to characterize the Rat and the Mole?

2. What dwelling has the Toad got? How is it described?

3. How does the Toad react to the visit of the Rat and the Mole? What type of temperament does his behaviour reveal? What words does he use? Give the character sketch of the Toad.

4. Have you known anything new about characters of the Rat and the Mole? Prove it with the text.
