CONAN DOYLE

Ex.1. Read the story1 attentively. Insert the missing words, given below.

Sherlock Holmes and a Taxi-Driver.

Everyone has heard of Sherlock Holmes, everyone has read his stories and enjoyed them... Sherlock Holmes, as you know, was a... detective whose adventures produce a great... not only on the young but on the old people as well.

In every story Holmes shows his great ability as a detective who was able to tell the whole history of a person... by looking at the person. Holmes looked at a man's hands, he... a small mark on the man's neck and he knew... that the man had been a soldier, that he had spent some years in India, etc, etc.

The author of all Sherlock Holmes' stories was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Once Sir Arthur was in Paris. He was going in a taxi from the railroad station to the hotel where he was going to spend the night. When he arrived at the hotel, he got out of the taxi and paid the taxi-driver more than he had to do.

"Thank you very much, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle", said the taxi-driver....

"How do you know who I am?" asked Sir Arthur. He was much surprised at... his name.

"Well, sir, I read in the newspaper yesterday that you were coming to Paris from the south of France. I also... that your hair was cut by a barber in the south of France. The train on which you had arrived came from the south of France. Your clothes, and... your hat, told me that you were English. So I put all this together and I guessed at once that you were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle".

"That is wonderful", said Sir Arthur. "With so... facts, you were really able to know me!"

"Of course", said the taxi-driver. "Your name is on the both of your travelling bags. That also helped me....

 

(famous, at once, greatly, simply, especially, hearing, smiling, few, a great deal, noticed, impression).

Ex.2. Read the story attentively again to find out

  1. Conan Doyle was a generous man;
if  
  2. he was a communicative person.
 

 

Ех.3. Reread the story and say

  1) Conan Doyle was really much surprised or he pretended to be surprised;
if 2) the taxi-driver really got the information from the newspaper;
  3) he was an observant person.
 

Ex.4. What word indicates that the taxi-driver didn't want to show how he came to know the writer’s name.

 

Ex.5. Read another story about Conan Doyle attentively.

Say if it differs much from the first one.

Cite the necessary words, phrases, sentences… to prove your point of view.
