(Lao Shanghai Chaguan; 5382 1202; 385 Middle Fangbang Rd; 385 tea from Y45; 9am-9pm; Yuyuan Garden) This wonderfully decrepit 2nd-floor teahouse, overlooking Old St, is a shrine to the 1930s, with music on scratched records, period typewriters, aged photos, an old fireplace, sewing machines, electric fans, an ancient fridge and oodles of charm. It’s a bit like barging into the attic of an eccentric aunt.

Old Shanghai Street Names

The naming of streets in Shanghai once depended on which concession they belonged to, French or English, except for the central area of the city where the streets were given the names of Chinese cities and provinces. While the foreign names have disappeared, streets named after Chinese places have been retained: those named after other Chinese cities are oriented east–west and those named after provinces north–south.
