China Art Palace & Former Expo Area

There’s no telling what will become of the former World Expo area, but the star attraction, the China Art Palace (formerly the China Pavilion), is touting itself as the next big museum to hit the city, with an emphasis on modern art. (Click here)

Liuli China Museum

Wonderfully quirky, this Taiwanese museum showcases ancient and contemporary glass sculpture from around the world, with an emphasis on the Buddhist-inspired creations of its founder, Loretta Yang. (Click here)

Jing’an Temple

A skyscraper only needs a few years to go up in Shanghai, but rebuilding this temple has been an eternal work in progress. Miraculously enough it’s now almost complete, its curved teak eaves set majestically against the modern Jing’an skyline. (Click here)

The Metro

The Shanghai metro is the world’s fastest-growing underground rail network, and recent developments continue to be a boon for visitors. New extensions to lines 11 and 13 should be complete by the time this book is in print, with more stations set to open by the end of 2014. (Click here)

Hongqiao Railway Station

Shanghai now has high-speed rail connections with Beijing, Hangzhou, Nanjing and other destinations throughout China, all of which leave from this new station, the largest in Asia.
