Past Forms/ Past Tenses (Past Simple/ Past Continuous/ Past Perfect. Revision.

Past Simple A: you/he +verb-ed/-d (regular verb),or you/he + irregular verb (think-thought, make-made) You worked / He thought I used to work N: you/he + did not +verb You did not work/ He did not think I did not use to work; I used not to.. Q/I.: did + you/he + verb? Did you work? / Did he think? Did you use to work?
Past Continuous A: he/you + was/were + verb –ing You were working/ He was working N: he/you + was/were not + verb –ing You were not working He was not working Q/I.:was/were + he/you + verb -ing ? Were you working? Was he working?
Past Perfect A: he/you + had + verb 3rdform (past participle) You had done/played N: he/you +had not + verb 3rd form (past participle) He had not done/played Q/I: had+ he/you + verb 3rd form(past participle) Had he done/played?
Past Perfect Continuous A: he/you + had + been + V-ing He had been working N: he/you + had not + been + V-ing He had not been working Q/I: Had + you + been + V-ing? Had he been working?

 

Ex. 1 Explain what tense is used in the following sentences and why. The prompts are given below.

1. Mary visited the British Museum when she was in London. / Peter won first prize in the art competition./ I found a new job three months ago.

2. John lived in Ireland for 15 years but now he lives in Liverpool.

3. Sue woke up, washed her face and had breakfast.

4. When Paul was younger, he often went fishing with his father.

5. Helen called me twice this morning. (the morning is over)

6. Charles Dickens wrote ‘Oliver Twist’.

7. My grandfather used to be a librarian./ He used to smoke heavily when he was younger.

8. Every evening he would do his homework, watch TV and go to bed quite early.

The Past Simple is used to describe: a) permanent situations in the past but are over at the time of speaking b) completed actions that took place at a definite time in the past. The exact time is either mentioned or implied; c) past habits or repeated actions in the past; adverbs of frequency (always, often, seldom, never, etc) may also be used; d) completed actions that took place one after the other in the past (in-story-telling or narratives); e) used to + infinitive expresses permanent states, past habits or repeated actions in the past; f) would + infinitive expresses past habits or describes someone’s typical behaviour in the past; we don’t use would with state verbs; g) with today, this morning/week, etc. if these periods of time are finished; h) actions which were performed by people who are no longer alive, even if the time is not stated.

2. While Helen was watching, Nick was studying.

3. She was having dinner when the lights went out.

4. It was early in the evening and it was beginning to get dark. She was having a cup of tea….

5. He was writing a play in those days.

6. I didn’t make the meeting last week. I was travelling to Rome.

7. My brother was always getting into trouble in the past.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) is used to describe:

a) actions happening at the same time in the past; b) an action that was in progress at a definite time in the past; c) a lengthy action that was in progress when a shorter or sudden one interrupted it. The longer action is in the Past Cont. and the shorter one is in the Past Simple (usually introduced by when); d) temporary past states or actions; e) background scenes to a story; f) repeated past actions or annoying past habits (with always, continually, etc); g) reasons and contexts for an event/ events
