My alma-mater is Poltava University of Economics and Trade. The University is one of the leading higher economic schools in Ukraine. It was founded in 1968 as a branch of Lviv Institute of Economics and Trade. In 1974, the University was opened as an independent higher educational establishment (Poltava Cooperative Institute). In 2003 it became Poltava University of Consumer Cooperatives in Ukraine. In 2010 the University was renamed in Poltava University of Economics and Trade

At present about 5000 students study at university. The students are admitted on the basis of their results at the entrance examinations. It trains specialists in various fields of economy for state and private enterprises as well as for joint ventures. The teaching staff numbers more than 260 Doctors, Candidates of Sciences, and teachers. The university has four departments training both full-time and extra mural students in different specialties. The task of the university is to give specialized training of a high degree. The main goal of the university professional training is development of students’ abilities, independent thinking and creative skills. The tuition lasts for 5 years. During the academic year students have to attend lectures, to carry out laboratories tests and to do practical work.

Poltava University of Economics and Trade is primarily concerned with teaching and research which complement and enhance each other. The university students can benefit from the opportunity to keep up-to-date with new teaching techniques and facilities. The university is housed in a five-stored building. It has many lecture halls, study rooms and laboratories, a library, some reading rooms, a gymnasium, an assembly hall, administration rooms and dean’s offices. We pride ourselves on the quality of our programs and graduates proficiency as well as the university facilities. There are 13 computer rooms equipped with 300 Pentium type computers, the Internet is also available. There are 4 hostels for students, a sport-health centre and a large library with 400 thousand books used for academic and research work.

After two years of studies the students major in different fields. They are Finance, Accounting and Audit, International Economics, Economics of an Enterprise, Business Management, Management of Foreign Economic Activity, Technology of Processing and Preserving Fruit and Vegetables, Technology of Meat Preserving and Processing, Catering Technology, Commodity Research and Commerce, Commodity Research and Customs, Marketing, Economic Cybernetics, Banking, Social Informatics, Human Resources Management and Labour Economics. The university trains economists, technologists, managers, accountants, financiers, marketing managers, customs control experts.

The Finance and Accounting department trains students in Finance, Banking, Accounting and Audit, International Economics. Academic Programs are designed to use computer technologies and provide high proficiency with regard to the latest hand-on-experience shared by the USA, Germany, France and UK academicians. Its graduates are welcomed in business firms of different varied ownership types.

The Department of Economics and Management trains students in Economics of an Enterprise, Economic Cybernetics, Informatics, Business Management, Human Resources Management and Labour Economics, Management of Foreign Economic Activity. It includes diversified programs in these majors that enable its graduates to get profound knowledge in Economics, Marketing, Management, Foreign Languages and Computer Technologies.

The Food Technology Department provides diversified programs in engineering education with the following specialization: Technology of Processing and Preserving Fruit and Vegetables, Technology of Meat Preserving and Processing, Catering Technology. Future specialists are encouraged to contribute widely to public catering and food manufacturing based on update technologies.

The Department of Merchandize and Commerce provides education in Commodity Research and Commerce, Commodity Research and Customs, Marketing. Its graduates are welcomed in any commercial firm or enterprise of various ownership types, customs unions, marketing departments and retail outlets.

The Foreign Students Department trains student from other countries (Russia, Belorussia, China, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, etc.)

The university trains students who combine work and study at the correspondence department. It provides students with two sessions a year, during which they have opportunities to listen to lectures, to participate in seminars, to prepare themselves for distant learning. The academic curriculum is identical for both full-time and extra-mural department students.

A comprehensive curriculum of general and humanitarian training is being provided at university. The trainers study Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Economic Theory, History of Ukraine, History of Culture, the Ukrainian and Foreign Languages. Extensive research in Food Science and Technology (Commodity, Service and Labour Marketing) is carried out by both staff and students.

Transitions into a market-oriented economy have changed the requirements for a job. The labour market tends to raise the average level of educational qualifications sought by graduates.

That’s why the university tries to up-date its resources to train specialists who will be competitive in the modern world.
