As you know I am a first-year student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Murmansk State Technical University. My specialized field is Oil & Gas Engineering. I have just started my studying and I do my bestto get as much knowledge as I can. I’m sure I made the right choice when I entered the University. I like studying here very much in spite of the fact that we have to work hard.

Every day we have three or four pairs of lessons. The lessons begin at 9 o’clock but as I live rather far from the University I must get up at 7 o’clock not to be late for the classes. I leave for the university at 8.30. Usually I go to the University by trolley-bus; it takes me about 20 minutes to get there. At 8.50 I am at the classroom. By the way, at first it was really a problem for the freshmen to find the necessary classroom. You see, our University includes some buildings marked by different letters and the lessons usually take place in different buildings located rather far from each other. At first we didn’t know the positions of these buildings and we were often late. But now we can find our ways to the classrooms.

As for the subjects we study they differ from the school ones. We study a lot of mathematics, some special subjects such as Fundamentals of Oil & Gas Engeneering, Oil & Gas Field Geology and some general subjects. We have lectures and seminars in Philosophy and History, practical classes in Physics and Chemistry. If the lecture is interesting, I listen to the professor very attentively and make notes. At the seminars we discuss different topics in small groups and everyone tries to express his or her point of view. Practical classes provide us practical skills for our future speciality. Unfortunately, I’m not good at foreign languages and English is quite a difficult subject for me. But I work hard at it not to fall behind the group and to pass the credit. My favourite subjects are Higher Mathematics and Descriptive Geometry. I’m good at them and often help my groupmates with the tasks. Physical Training is very important at our university. We go in for different kinds of sports: track-and-field, basketball, volleyball, swimming and wrestling. My favourite sport is basketball. I play for our university team.

We often go to the library or reading hall to take books for our studying or to prepare for our classes and seminars. Besides we have additional classes in all subjects at which we can consult with our teachers in the matters which are not quite clear for us. As I attend all the lectures, seminars, classes and try not to miss additional consultation classes I usually come home at 5 o clock. Then I have some meals and begin to prepare for the next day. I always have a lot of homework to do for the following day. I look through my summaries, do exercises, read books and articles in newspapers and magazines, sometimes I make reports. So in the evening I am usually very tired. I go to bed at 11 o’clock. The only time when I can have a short rest is Saturday evening because Sunday is my day off and I don’t have to go to the University. But nevertheless I like studying at the university because every day I learn a lot of new interesting things.
