Writing the motivation letter is an important step in the application 1) ___ it is the basis on which the organizing groups select their participants! There's no are perfect 2) ___ or instructions on how to write your motivation letter for BEST courses - every student is unique, and this should be reflected in this letter! However, there are some general tips and hints that might be useful, and might help you in getting accepted more easily!

First of all, it might be that the organizers have to read a few hundred motivation letters, so to attract their attention, try to be creative and funny. In general, your motivation letter should 3) ___ the following parts:

• Something about yourself - what you study, what you do in your life, what are your hobbies, sports you do, maybe what languages you speak...

BEST courses are always a lot of fun, so the organizers should know that you are a funny person!

• Why you want to go to abroad, and why do you want to go to a BEST summer/winter/spring course! It is important for the organizers to have 4)___, open persons - the course does not consist only of the 5)___program!

• Why you want to go to especially THIS event you're applying for: why is the topic attractive, why might the 6) ___ you can gain there help you (in your studies, in your future career...) - the event does neither consist of only the social part, so let the organizers know that you are interested in the course as well!!!

• Sometimes, it is needed to tell the organizers that you have a 7)___ knowledge of the topic - so let them know that and how you do! To find out what 8) ___ - read the course information on the 9) ___ carefully, as probably there are some hints telling you which kind of participant are expected to apply!

• Don't let the letter be too short or too long. One or half of an A4 page, is just enough to get the organizers to notice you. If the letter is too long, they might not want to read it, but if it's too short, they will think that you are not interested enough in the course!

All in all, these are just some general hints - take the ones you want, leave the ones you don't like, but in any case, add your own 10)___ and style, be creative, and you'll have your motivation letter to go on a BEST course!

5. Distribute the following tips for writing a motivation letter into two columns: “Do” or “Don’t”.

“Do” “Don’t”
   

a. ensure there are no errors and spelling mistakes and that you have written the addressee’s name correctly;

b. your motivation letter should be more than two page long and with long and detailed themed paragraphs;

c. give additional information that does not fit easily into a CV;

d. use superfluous descriptions or poetic phrases unless you're applying to study sciences like engineering;

e. it is worth spending some time experimenting with different versions before adopting a style that suits both you and the organization you are writing to;

f. demonstrate your interest in and knowledge of a programme/Master’s course you are applying for;

g. use positive and active words where possible, e.g. achieved, organized, negotiated;

h. give insight about your hopes, goals, motivations, and dedication;

i. provide evidence of your key strengths by referring to experience listed on your CV;

j. explain how your assignment will add value to your ongoing local interests and also those in your Home and Host Universities;

k. remember to explain your planned objectives and expected results;

l. mind the layout of your letter;

m. put all the documents you have to hand in into a thin folder.
